Do We Need A 3D Web?

from the not-convinced dept

Last fall I mentioned that I have a book from ’96 or ’97 about VRML, the 3D modeling language that never went anywhere. It was somewhat cool at the time, but not too many people wanted to browse the internet in 3D. Has anything changed since then? Well, there’s a bit more bandwidth going around (for some people, at least), which could have an impact, but I’m still not convinced that people really care to browse into the third dimension. That, of course, is no reason for people to stop trying. A working draft of a new 3D modeling language has been released and the true believers are back. I’m interested to see what people do with it, but I’ll withhold judgment until I see if anyone actually find it useful.
