The Digital Music Age

from the yes,-but... dept

A good paper over at First Monday about digital music. It gives a pretty good history of previous challenges the music industry has faced and how they’ve dealt with technology issues in the past. However, I would have preferred that the article use that as a basis for looking into ways the industry can adopt to mp3s going forward. Instead, it seems to leave that as an excercise to the reader. It also feels like the paper was written quite a while ago, as they leave out a number of things that have happened recently that would be relevant (the state of Napster, Universal buying MP3.com, the launch of Pressplay and MusicNet, and the rise of Gnutella, Morpheus and KaZaa systems). So, I would say this is a good background paper, but it certainly could use a lot more work.
