Spinning Off Xerox PARC

from the will-it-work? dept

Xerox PARC, the place where they invented the future five years ago (and now have it collecting dust in the corner) is finally being spun off as an independent company. I’m not sure this is a great move. Of course, Xerox stifled the amazing research that came out of PARC for years… but independent research organizations have a lot more pressure for silly things like “profits” and so a lot of the cooler pure research activities will go away. Plus, when Paul Allen tried to build a “private version of PARC” (also known as Interval Research) a few years ago it failed spectacularly.
