We Want You…Back

from the we've-changed-really-we-have dept

Apple is hoping that Mac OS X will help win back Mac users who went over to the Dark Side, as well as Windows users considering an XP upgrade. Mac OS X is a very capable OS and is holding its own against XP with reviewers. But, is Apple biting off more than it can chew by going after Windows users? It might be smarter to first go after a market that will be sold on the techology and create new software for the platform: Linux users. OS X is based on unix and so it’s kind of like getting two computers in one OS. On one hand you have access to a full UNIX command line and can run most unix based apps, including x-window apps. On top of that, add a very well integrated GUI. The combination makes for one good looking unix workstation.

Re: Re: hmm. the flaw there is..

I dont’ think we can say *all* linux users are cheap, I mean I really don’t think that most people use linux because the OS itself is free. Granted the hard core open source people will never like Apple, but I think there are a lot of “casual” linux users who like the command line, like open source, and don’t like Windows that could be persuaded to change to the MacOS.

Apple had done what no other vendor to date has do

That is ship a ‘consumer friendly’ UNIX.

Having said that, I won’t buy any more Apple products. Why? I do not trust management to deliver on promises.

Apple’s pricing on hardware USED to be obscene, in comparison to the rest of the market. Today, it is just gross.

Another question: Why the Linux fixation? There are over 190+ products all claiming to be Linux. Why fixate on a VERY fragmented market….that of the Linux fork of the month club?

Exactly. Apple will become the number one Unix vendor with OS X. When i wrote Linux, I really meant anyone looking for a personal Unix workstation. Sure, OS X is beefed up BSD, but in addition to that you get a polished GUI and support for lots of devices and multimedia applications. Also, apple has some of the most interesting and competitive laptops on the market. My understanding is that Linux/Unix on laptops can be tricky to install.
