Venture Capitalists Investing In Auto Body Shops?

from the the-world-is-changing dept

When I was in high school I worked at a bagel shop for a few years. The owner once told me about his years (prior to owning the bagel shop) when he owned an auto body shop. He asked me if I knew what auto body was, and I nodded. Then he said, “you know, you steal cars, break ’em up, and sell off the pieces”. It was fun working for that guy. After dealing with a little car accident this summer and having to deal directly with an auto body shop, I can see how that can be a lucrative business (insurance companies pay ridiculous sums for parts). Perhaps that’s why VCs are suddenly investing in auto body shops. It’s mostly a consolidation play, as they look to go beyond the mom-and-pop chop shops, and use information technology to make the auto body world more efficient.
