Idiotic Palm Lawyers Go After Support Sites

Someone needs to go buy Palm’s lawyers a clue or six. There are a ton of websites out there that have the word “Palm” in the domain name. For the most part, these are all sites that review Palm applications and devices and help people to get more out of their Palms. This should be a good thing, right? It should help sales of Palm devices, and Palm desperately is in need of sales right now. So, Palm’s brilliant plan is to tell every one of these sites that they can’t use the word Palm any more but need to change all their references to PalmOS. This means they all need to go out and register new domains – and most are chosing to do so by ditching the Palm altogether. Even worse, most seem to be going with “Pocket” instead, which will tend to make people think they’re supporting Microsoft’s Pocket PC. In other words, this is a huge boneheaded move by Palm, which basically pushes a number of their supporters right into the camp of their competitor. I like Palm’s backtracking attempted face-saving response saying they were just trying to start a conversation – and people might have (maybe, possibly) been able to keep the domain they already had if they talked to Palm about it first.
