Will This Lead To Increased Net Surveillance?

from the careful-to-make-choices-at-this-point dept

A number of stories of all sorts have been appearing about what this will all mean for our civil liberties. I’m holding a wait and see attitude, and believing that enough people are keeping a cool enough head not to let our civil liberties disintegrate. At the same time, however, the FBI is using (abusing?) this opportunity to push their Carnivore monitoring system on ISPs. I have no problem with ISPs assisting in investigations, but I fear a precedent that gives the government free access to any messages at any time. Privacy advocates are urging the government not to take drastic steps.
