HP Buys Compaq

from the consolidation dept

Remember back in July of 1999 when both Compaq and HP were interviewing the same group of candidates to become CEO of each company? Then, in July of 2000 we had an article comparing the two and it was unclear which company got the better deal. Well, now it doesn’t matter any more, because the two are about to become the same company, with HP buying Compaq for about $25 billion. Of course, such a merger brings up a ton of integration questions, as well as the more general question of “why?”. Expect massive layoffs from the combined companies… Update: Thanks to the reader (you know who you are) who sent me the following article from January of this year where an analyst said that HP should buy Compaq and another analyst trashes him saying it’s the stupidest idea he’s ever heard.
