Productivity Gains May Stick Around

from the how-productive-are-you? dept

We’ve discussed productivity questions here before, and I think it’s an interesting subject – even if I still believe people ask the wrong questions about it. Business Week is looking at whether or not productivity gains are here to stay or if they were a one-time effect of the boom economy over the past five years. There are some good points about the recent drop in productivity being due to companies trying to hold on to workers and avoid layoffs despite slower times (less work to do with more people = lower productivity per person). However, there is still plenty that can be done to improve productivity – and with the number of bad attempts at increasing productivity through information technology – you would think that if people can figure out how to use technology well, then productivity will start to increase again.
