The Economist has their own take on the all the layoffs in the past few months. They point out that rarely have layoffs come with so little warning, or been so focused on “knowledge workers”. They also suggest that it’s a bit of a reaction to the short-term pressures of Wall Street, rather than true long term thinking. Then, they bring up the big issue: lawsuits. A lot of firms may be facing lawsuits for the way they handle layoffs – especially if disproportionate numbers of older, minority, or female workers get the boot. A lot of companies are trying to “hide” layoffs by “firing” poor performers, but that could lead to problems as well.
