Stay Away from Layoff Stories

from the news-is-news dept

An article in Salon urges the press to stop reporting all these stories about layoffs at dot coms because they’re not really newsworthy. They are just stories about companies that have been throwing away money for a while and are finally be forced to deal with the consequences. However, the fact is, it is news. People are fascinated by the whole dot com new economy and want to know what’s happening in it. The fact that some companies are having to face the music and can’t rely on just getting even more money is newsworthy. Sure, articles that portray it as the end of the world are just being silly, but these stories are still newsworthy, and lots of people want to read them.

motivation for this story?

Salon hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire with their corporate performance. With a stock price of $2 and change, they’re down in the basement almost at the depths of the common dot com targets like drkoop, cdnow, and beyond. Perhaps they’re worried that the next dot com layoff story could be about them.
