Payer Auctioning off $500 MS Check

from the follow-the-story dept

Okay, see if you can follow this story (and I’ll admit, the beginning parts have been overplayed everywhere way too much): Microsoft forgets to pay for domain renewal causing Hotmail (among other sites) to be impossible to reach for many users. Random Slashdot-reading guy with a credit card and a Hotmail account he wants to access goes to Network Solutions and pays them Microsoft’s late payment. Microsoft very happy and agrees to pay him for his trouble. Guy recieves check from Microsoft for $500 (fee paid on his credit card: $35). Instead of cashing the check, guy decides to put it up for auction, and donate whatever funds raised to charity. No surprise, of course, that the check appears to be worth more than $500 to some people.
