Saving RealNetworks Streams
from the not-what-they-expected dept
To be honest, I’m surprised no one has done this before. Or perhaps, people have, but just haven’t made it public. Streambox has created a system to save RealNetworks streaming audio in MP3 or Windows Media Audio format. This upsets RealNetworks who has always claimed one of the nice things about streaming is that the content provider can decide whether or not the end user can keep a copy, thanks to its encryption. Streambox breaks right through that encryption, and expect RealNetworks not to just accept this “innovation”.

Nothing new.
There has been a pretty foolproof way to do this for a while. You set up a program which pretends to be the windows sound driver, and RealNetworks or any other program just writes right to it. From there you re-encode in whatever, and there’s little loss because it never hits analog.
