Reverse Bidding for Your College Education

Well, it seems that someone has decided to take the Priceline reverse auction model to college. That’s right, this guy is hoping that colleges will sign up and be able to accept “bids” from perspective students as to how much they’re willing to pay for 4 years of top grade education. To me this concept has a way too many problems to even get started, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the lawyers from Priceline put a stop to it all before any of those issues really matter.

Haven’t read the article, but I would have thought that the better model would be the reverse: You submit your credentials, essays, etc. to a central auction administrator (ETS?..), and schools bid on you as a prospective student. The educational market is incredibly competitive (where it isn’t state subsidized or alumni-subsidized), so for thousands of smaller schools, this model would offer a way to “buy” the students you might not otherwise attract.

Actually, I agree, that’s not a bad idea… That makes a lot of sense. The name your own price thing, doesn’t really make much sense at all. Of course, from a student’s perspective, they probably like the name your own price idea, and I’d bet it was a student who came up with the idea.
