CheckOut.com Gets Checked Out

from the when-word-of-mouth-is-too-much dept

I think I might have to create a new topic for internet stupidity (like the guy from the IBM commercials). The latest entrant is CheckOut.com, the new ecommerce site from Michael Ovitz and supermarket king Ron Burkle, two guys who know absolutely nothing about the internet, and didn’t bother to find out anything before moving forward. They apparently attempted to have a little prelaunch sale for registered users and assumed it would be a small affair. What they didn’t understand is that super cheap products spread like wildfire on the internet, and soon everyone and their chat buddies were buying everything in the store. CheckOut’s solution? Turn off the servers.
