Offline Online Paging

from the this-has-to-bring-up-some-questions dept

An Israeli company is now marketing a product that lets you send ICQ pages even to people who are offline. This isn’t simply a “store and alert” method. It apparently will ping the users’ modem and send a message. They also plan AOL Instant Messenger and Yahoo Pager versions of this. I’m a little concerned about this. First of all, it has to be able to find my modem, and then I’m not sure I like the idea of another computer connecting to mine when I want to be offline… And that leaves out the $10/month charge. While I like these instant messaging technologies (and might be addicted to them), there’s a reason I go offline occasionally.
