Canadian DMCA Coming Up
from the no-surprises-there dept
Mikester writes in with a note about how some Canadian politicians are set to introduce their version of the DMCA law sometime next week. While Canada has definitely been a lot more reasonable about file sharing and fair use, this isn’t that surprising. The recording industry has been pushing for much stricter laws — including some that would clearly kill off online music stores, and many Canadian politicians have shown themselves willing to do the recording industry’s bidding. Amusingly, despite things like anti-circumvention rules and a notification system for alerting people they may be infringing, the recording industry isn’t particularly happy with the law, complaining that it isn’t strong enough. These days, you get the feeling that any law that doesn’t just let the recording industry dip into everyone’s wallets any time they hear a song anywhere isn’t “strong enough.”
