You mean like "Hurt Locker"? The flaw in your plan is the assumption that Hollywood makes films people would HAVE to see instead of want to see. That is what worked for Avatar. People got the word of mouth that they HAD to see it. Hurt Locker was released to DVD first, and then went to theaters to gain Oscar cred. However, no one went to see it, even after it won.
