Laws must be effectively enforced if they're going to have any value. They're useless without enforcement. It's hard to enforce the law without the resources to do so.
And how, pray tell, do I do that? I dress modestly, wear no makeup, scrape my hair into a bun, and don't flirt. I'm lucky I've mostly worked in civilised places where my male colleagues behave themselves so I don't have to worry about speaking out as there's no need to. My #MeToo experiences can, for the most part, be labelled "creepy behaviour." I've not had to deal with such crap for the last 15 years or so. I guess being almost 50 years old helps.
We're all assuming that an ordinary Joe can't work out how to use makeup and make it look natural.
Reprisals from abusers can literally wreck your life and career: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/dec/15/peter-jackson-harvey-weinstein-ashley-judd-mira-sorvino This is why we freeze. If you do fight back or speak out, chances are you'll be screwed. If you don't, you're a whore. We can't win.
I doubt it was consensual -- "And they let you" might well mean "And they freeze in terror because I'm a powerful celebrity and who are they? No one will do any more to help them than they did for Epstein's victims. Remember how he paraded them all over MIT's Media Lab? Those girls looked so scared, members of staff kept asking them if they were okay. And nobody did anything. He got clean away with it for years. And so did I." Women freeze when they feel threatened, it's a natural reaction to protect themselves against the injuries they might receive if they fight back. It's so deeply embedded in us that even female soldiers have been known to freeze when men go all creepy on them. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/10/get-a-weapon/596677/ We can't help it. And the younger and more frightened they are, the more likely they are to freeze. Social conditioning doesn't help; we're supposed to be quiet and not make a fuss. Those of us more used to lashing out at nuisances are less likely to freeze but we end up being called troublemakers -- or face ostracism for rocking the boat. This is what #MeToo is all about.
Indeed. As I've repeatedly advised:
1) admit you fouled up
2) apologise
3) change your attitude and see what you can learn from the debacle instead of getting all defensive and having to defend yourself or hide forever
4) demonstrate your new, changed attitude (and lessons learned) in your conduct going forward
5) if/when someone brings your old, bad conduct up, admit it happened and advise you've moved on, don't be defensive, that'll just make it worse.
Preferably after the islanders who currently live there have been evacuated due to climate change. Then the climate change deniers can move in with the ant-vaxxers.
That happened to a homesteader Mormon in Vermont. I'm FB friends with her and it was a real eye-opener. I mean, Vermont??!
@AAC, would that you were correct about sociopathy being banned. Alas, it is not, hence the existence of Trump, Johnson, Farage, Proud Boys and assorted other weirdos. It's behaviour that we ban, not psychological complications.
I submit Iceland as an example, now settle down.
Agreed in full, AC. Gun control advocate here, and that is what I mean by "Gun control."
I only hate them when they're not as deliciously funny as this one.
That there is a 2 year gap between ok-to-screw and legal adult has to be nothing more than the result of old men wanting to bone young girls. If it was for the benefit of 16 year olds the age of responsibility would have been made to match age of consent. I think you're right, AC. http://www.unchainedatlast.org/child-marriage-in-maryland/
Hmm. The police and the prosecution decided to railroad a girl for child pornography while seemingly ignoring the male “offenders” (i.e., the man in the video and the boy who reported the video in the first place). That seems rather odd…unless this was about policing female sexuality in some way, which I can see being at least a partial motivating factor in the decision to arrest her for, charge her with, and have her tried for essentially self-victimizing herself. Boys will be boys, girls will be sluts, or some such bullshit. Methinks you're correct, Mr. Stone.
AC, your "Puritan" is Hamilton, a mad Ayyadurai fanboi who cheerled the anticipated smackdown of TD until it didn't happen at all. He hates me, Mike, and anyone who disagrees with him. Hilariously, he whines about censorship and slander/libel while repeating troll posts about me and insulting Mike, his family, his cat, the neighbour's dog, members of TD staff and assorted commenters. He freaks the hell out over having his posts hidden by the community and whines about censorship and Section 230. Blue hates Mike and "The Rich" but loves copyright despite that it's specifically used to benefit "The Rich." He's the mad conspiracy theorist who obsessively combs this site to find old accounts whose users rarely post to "prove" that Mike and his staff have nothing better to do than create fake accounts in order to pretend that TD has more commenters than it actually does. He loves to call us kids and pirates, etc. Favourite phrases include "Pirate Mike," "I made it, I own it," "common law," and "Another anomaly!" His mum is probably Cersei Lannister since he seems to think the truth is whatever he says it is. John Smith is the mad incel with some kind of mailing list get rich quick plan that would totally work it it wasn't for those pesky pirates, or something. He's also dead famous and is going to sue us all for taking the mickey out of him -- and, oh, the scandal! -- hiding his inane blather. Should I issue trading cards for them?
[Sad but True]. I actually prefer to trust what I can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste. Due to some incredibly excellent personal experiences (I've just landed a new job that seems tailor-made for me since it demands a person with my personal attributes) I firmly believe in the existence of God. I find answered prayers to be proof enough of His existence. Or you could argue that I've had a lot of lucky coincidences, take your pick. The faux religious virtue-signalling types generally think of God as being some kind of cosmic slot machine or a dotard granddad figure who pays no attention to what they actually do as long as they make the right noises. Since it makes those of us who make an effort look bad I can't be dealing with them.
I love silly cat videos! They're my go-to when I've had a bad day.
Thanks, AC. There's also the Qumran scrolls to consider (which proved the texts and translations to be correct). Shut up, ECA, or we'll have fun with you.
Using religion as a fig leaf for bad behaviour is an abomination.
Re: 'Hey, look over there, a handy scape-goat!'
^This. Domestic violence and anti-social attitudes are common traits among mass shooters and spree killers.
