The article misses the point I think. Bad things are not happening all the time, but when they are we want to be ready. I feel like the person who wrote this would be mad at a jumper cable manufacturer for suggesting I keep a set of cables in my trunk.
We live in a world where so many of the bad things that used to happen don’t any more. So much pain and death has been pushed away thanks to so many systems we have in the world (or at least the US). The Watch and the iPhone are now pushing into that long tail of the places where the current systems are no where near being.
The new hardware features we saw today make perfect sense with the Lockdown mode we are getting with iOS 16. I haven’t been in journalism in a while, but I know that if I were someone trying to report things in a dangerous area I would want bot the 14 Pro and Watch Ultra.
I say all this as I was looking to get started on a project today of putting a bunch of important papers for my family into a new fireproof box. I hope I don’t need to test the fireproofing of the box, but it is there just in case. So much of my life though is also on my phone and knowing it can be a tool for a similar kind of readiness is nice.
