What is going on with Canada and Great Britain? I used to think Americans could take a few cues from them regarding individual liberties and common sense, but between the press censorship bills being passed in GB and these crazy laws in Canada, I don't know what's going on lately.

    Alternative Mice?

I've been interested in alternatives to the traditional mouse for decades. The big problem I've had is nothing produced so far has the precision and speed of a traditional mouse setup. The newest trackpads (esp apple's) come close, but they just are cumbersome to use for mouse intensive work. Same thing for the motion based mice. They just aren't as efficient. For casual use, touchscreens and trackpads are useful, but for any serious, detailed work, you need a mouse.

Update from the district said the students were only supposed to be working in 2 other apps, and they accessed the photos without permission. So they are being suspended for opening an app on a school ipad without permission!

As to why the teacher synced to her personal account, my district just issued some ipads, but won't pay for any apps. So to buy any apps, you have to be synced to a personal account (for the Credit Card). I'm sure this is what happened to this unfortunate teacher. But these kids are being railroaded, for sure. Lawsuit time. But then again it's Indiana!

Don't blame the teachers or the unions on this one. This is all the gov't trying to make teaachers "accountable" and the whole asinine education reform BS thats been going on for the last decade. It's all about superficial requirements and not about educating students. This is all the state and feds trying to make things look good without addressing the real issues in education. Just more BS from the state.

    Re: Jobs

Exactly. The reason that the legislation took so long it the republicans were trying to include measures to destroy the postal unions. That is thier real goal. Look at what they've done in Indiana and Wisconsin and Ohio to see what the real agenda is.

Privatizing is a straw man arguement. The private sector is only willing to cherry pick the most populated areas to serve. One reason the USPS is losing money is that they are not allowed to cut back on post offices and must serve EVERYONE in the country. UPS or FedEx is not willing to do that. It's a case of apples and oranges. People want post offices. They contribute to the overall spirit of a community. That's a significant contribution that the USPS makes to communities. That's also a reason that it has to remain a publicly run service. Imagine the problems if a company like Comcast ran the mail. Do you really think people would be happier with that?

Franzen has a point, but he does sort of go off the deep end. Preservation of digital material is a huge problem. Look at all the data saved by NASA on old mag tapes. Look at all the old music on vinyl that never got transfered over to cds, much less mp3s (at least not legally). That material is in danger of being lost forever. Then think off another 50 years, and probably 10-15 generations of different electronic devices and formats. Printed books have the advantage of not having to be updated and transfered. Think about all the family photo albums saved as jpegs, and what will happen to them as formats change and devices become obsolete. Franzen is wrong to blame ereaders for the problem, but there is a problem with long term storage of digital information. Information lasts as long as someone is attentive and updates it to new formats. Once it gets forgotten and stuck in an old corner somewhere, it may be lost to future generations.
