Agreed...but there's no way HotFile can know who has the rights to what. There will be obvious items. Such as WB trying to take down a Linux distribution. But what if the newest Batman was made by 20th Century Fox but WB has the distribution rights? There's just no way for HotFile to be able to know that.
"The only thing I'm not sure about here, though, is whether or not Hotfile actually has standing to bring such a claim. I would have thought that it had to be done by the actual copyright holder of the content taken down (or someone else injured by such a takedown)."
How wouldn't HotFile be injured by that? It make their service look completely unreliable simple for trying to comply with take-down clause in the DMCA safe harbors.
Actually, this was posted on Reddit...what they found was it was piss poor CSS code. Nothing more.
Facebook is giving up Places (Foursquare competitor) and Deals (Groupon competitor) and is now going after Instagram with plans to add filters to your photos on FB.
Instagram was all in a tizzy last night with lots of #IGaintFB posts. Apparently, for a good part of the summer, FB was trying to purchase Instagram. When that didn't happen, they just decided to copy it.
...and I'm not the least bit worried. See, Foursquare, Twitter and Groupon are all still around. This will be gone after a few months.
The case was about Bell denying service to a user based on the presumption that he was guilty of using the phone for illicit activity. Bell, being the owner of those lines...
In the BART case, we have BART - the owner of the repeaters - denying service to it's users based on the presumption that they were going to use their phones for illicit activity.
I really don't see how you can NOT see that.
There will be an initial impact...but what do you think is going to happen in a few weeks when they announce the iPhone 5? This was a strategic move by Apple...this is absolutely THE BEST time for him to step down without lasting impact to Apple's value. Not only is the iPhone 5 coming out...but it's also going to Sprint (probably). So, now you've got 52 million more eligible customers in the US alone.
...plus all the 'back-to-school' products being sold...yeah, this isn't going to last past their next quarterly shareholders meeting.
Tomorrow there will be a good dip in their stock, but once they make that announcement...they'll easily be the most valuable company...
/fanboy
But it doesn't make it any less true.
***EDIT***
Valuations based on the US...not the world.
***EDIT***
I hope you meant that sarcastically. Apple is the 2nd most valuable company in the world. And it's only $10B away from being the 1st. Google couldn't afford Apple if Google's worth doubled and Apple's halved.
If he wins all of them he'll have 1.6 trillion dollar! *puts pinky up to side of mouth*
Similarly, we have "attempted murder" or in the drug using world "intent to distribute".
Perhaps someone will make a new crime with "attempted distribution" or "intent to distribute" which would be a lesser penalty than actually distributing.
I'm the same way...I work for a small company as the systems administrator. There's quite a few people here who are close to my age and I get along with great at work...but that's where it ends. My FB/social networking is my private life.
Working for a small company (150 employees) there tends to be a lot of water cooler talk. I lost 80 through diet and exercise and heard rumors that I lost the weight via smoking crack rock. And, since I'm not a healthy weight and a lot better looking before, I hear a lot more "he's sleeping with..." "he's slept with..." and none of it is true.
Heaven forbid these rumor mongers have an actual glimpse into my real life (I think they'd be bored to death!)
And I completely agree...a teacher's relationship with a student is far different than my relationship with the users at my company. There's no professional benefit from me friending my coworkers. There is some benefit to the teacher/student.
+1
That's what I was thinking...but if it's their equipment to provide a service for their users...then I don't see how it could be illegal for them to turn it off. I think when you block the signal, it's actually messing with the carrier's signal.
"So can someone explain why the federal government is coming down so hard on Bradley Manning, rather ***thank*** taking some of that energy and focusing on securing the State Department's computers?"

"A facebook is a printed or online collection of photographs of people."
Similar to a yearbook.
Does that count even if you don't technically owe the money...?
Yes, I know what apparently means. And yes...it can and has been overused in this instance.
The focus IS on Osama Bieder (as well as a Stephanie something) and Google's payment offering does NOT use PayPal.
It's common for writers to overuse the word "apparently" apparently to avoid committing to a statement of fact.
...you like the word apparently. 4 uses in the first paragraph, twice in 1 sentence. If it was so apparent, then why did you feel the need to keep reminding us of how apparent it is?
Sorry. It was just hard to read because of that.
As for the topic, it's tough to enforce something like this. Those two execs have experience with working on electronic payment systems and Google, offering their own service, would need employees with experience to help them get theirs off of the ground.
I mean, isn't that what we all do? Take our work experience to the next job and use that knowledge to excel at the next place...?
Now, if there were some proprietary PayPal tech going into the new Google system...I could see the problem, but if that's not the case then I don't see how PayPal has a chance here.

Bravo.
