Great book I just read discusses a lot of these subjects. Recommended to me by Hypebot's blog. I highly recommend it as you all seem very passionate discussing the changing music business.
Music 3.0: A Survival Guide for Making Money in the Internet Age
Thats actually becoming a problem for the CD distributors because retailers have realized that nobody is buying CDs anymore. They've decided to use the display space for more profitable items such as TOASTERS that can't be moved around the internet like music can.
I give the big labels 3 years before they are non-existent. You can tell from the power-point that they are seriously struggling. And NO they won't get a bailout package either!
I think the idea of a filter is key as there is so much out there now. There are a lot of opportunities for websites to act as filters for new artists. Lets not forget songwriters either, their still the people behind the scene pushing out some great music.
