I keep hearing things about the internet being open, but I have yet to hear a real definition of open. It is like cloud computing, WTF is cloud computing? Ask 100 people and you will likely get 100 answers. China, Iran, Australia, and even the U.S. all have walled gardens.
The NSA barely has enough resources to take care of their own business, how about if they focus on helping the federal government clean up and secure their critical assets, then worry about what else they can spy on.
Really, this should be broken down better. There is a mix of pre-government and post-government, or pre-private and post-private positions, if you want to get good clear indications, you should break it down as both ways, like so:
Government employee to public sector
Public sector to Government employee.
It would make things more clear and probably clear up a lot of the misconceptions you are propagating with the current data. Not that I have missed the point, but it would just be a better representation I believe.
I do however agree with him in the sense that it is sad that you can't go to tower records or borders anymore. I used to love the selection of "B" movies tower had, and they would order ones that I requested...and there couldn't have been any other Russ Meyer fans in the area!!! Border's was pretty cool because they would let you lounge around in their store, I just came short of coming in wearing nothing but my underwear a few times and they never gave me a second look. I know, this doesn't really have much to do with the creative class disappearing, but I agree with you on that point, I don't think it is. There are MANY avenues to expression in this day and age, find one and have fun!
Gobiner Perry in infamous for having a VERY thin skin, not just for a few reporters, but for ANYONE who questions his decisions or judgement. I live in Texas, so I have some degree of interest in seeing him go away...it would make the place livable again!
Back in the 40's-70's when someone copied something you were doing, you just said "Hey, competition is good, I will make better stuff/things and whip their asses". Now it is "Hey, I will sue them out of existence because I have 40 lawyers and 500 billion dollars of tax payer money!".
It is people like you who speak constantly of patriotism and military greatness who never served and should have no right to an opinion on the matter. For those of us how DID server, we have every right to speak of it, and normally do not. Get out of MY country, I did fight for it after all.
Rebel sucks. I actually tried it out just out of curiosity, but it didn't work worth a shit...good luck to them with basing their whole business model off of shitty software...oh, wait...Microsoft and TONS of others have already proven that a viable model. I welcome our new Rebel overlords.
A big problem is productivity, if someone is getting their job done, that is great, but that does not remove the liability of some stupid dope posting things from your company internet access that can lead to liable, or worse. I can understand wanting access to communicate to friends, but when you are at work, you should be working, not socializing and being an idiot. I have yet to see a valid use for facebook, twitter or any other social site. It is just plain silly and of no value.
My sister-in-law is actually the representing law firm of the couple, and if it were me it happened to...I would sue the shit out of them! You need to know the whole story before you condemn the couple for suing.
I don't know about anyone else, but I listen to XM when I am driving. I do a ton of driving! I really enjoy it, and I can not listen to streaming internet radio when I am driving. I could listen to MP3s, but I don't want to have to hook up the damn player every time I get in the car and take it out every time I get out. My XM is built in and I just start my car and listen. I hope they survive. I really do have a hard time with the fact that they have been around for so long and are just now having problems, normally this kind of thing happens in the first couple of years, before you have a trillion people invested in the hardware and lifetime subs.
The problem I have with free as PART of a business model is that normally what ever piece of free they are trying to push is tied to something that is NOT free. For example, if you buy one and get one free, I promise you, the price of the one you are paying for is making up for anything you might get for free. Relating to new media, you might have a free online news outlet, but the free part is the invasion of privacy in the form of ads, requiring you to have an "account" to login to see the free content or SPAM in the form of "reminders" that you haven't logged in in X number of days, or they you are missing out on the latest widget that the site has. I want to surf the internet or go to the store and have NO ONE keeping track of what I bought, or what my toilet paper buying habits might be!
I live in the Dallas Texas area, and I get around 25 High Def channels over the air...and they are very pretty! That and my netflix Roku and I don't need cable, sat or anything else!
Uh...an ATM is not a voting machine. ATMs are simply a console into the bank's systems, the backend systems are what process your transactions and deliver your money. The ATM is simply an interaction point. Unlike voting machines which accept input and tally votes based on the total independence of the software running on a simple machine...not so simple, eh?
I am a full time employed consultant...I work for a company as a consultant that is. I do about 60% travel, but when I am in town, I home office. The company pays for my VOIP, Internet and part of my electric bill, as I run about 6 servers, 2 firewalls, VPN and other misc. equipment in order to do my job. Are those perks?, I don't think so, they are a cost of doing business the way you have to now-a-days. If I worked for joe's widgets and joe wanted me to work from home, I would expect him to pay for anything that I am required to have to do my job.
Define Open:

Really?!?

Better analysis

Reminds me of the old days
Back in the 40's-70's when someone copied something you were doing, you just said "Hey, competition is good, I will make better stuff/things and whip their asses". Now it is "Hey, I will sue them out of existence because I have 40 lawyers and 500 billion dollars of tax payer money!".

No...the bank pays a fee to use the MasterCard brand, Mastercard gets paid no matter what.

Cell phone is a private citizen who answers to laws, the government is supposed to answer to the citizens...you are a douche.
I won't believe it until...
He includes Battery by Metallica!!! "BAAAATEREEEEEE!!!!"

Wrong, just plain wrong

Hmmm...
The actual piece of hardware looks a lot like an old bay networks 10mbit switch...I wonders.....
Sure...until it happens to you!
My sister-in-law is actually the representing law firm of the couple, and if it were me it happened to...I would sue the shit out of them! You need to know the whole story before you condemn the couple for suing.
What about car based XM?
I don't know about anyone else, but I listen to XM when I am driving. I do a ton of driving! I really enjoy it, and I can not listen to streaming internet radio when I am driving. Free? Doubtful...
