    As soon as they scan me - the book I'm holding and the CD I bought - they will be the ones breaking the ever-so-precious IP and copyright laws. It's hard to see how they can justify breaking the law to check and see if I might be breaking the law. Of course, since I just bought these items at the mall bookstore I never did anything illegal or to even raise the suspicion.

    Obviously this is hypothetical, because I don't shop at malls, I buy digital copies of my books and I doubt I'll ever buy another commercially produced CD in my life.

    Why are you asking for stats that should show the demise of an industry that is perfectly healthy and reaping record profits in the midst of all this "piracy" that someone, somewhere is claiming destroys this same industry.

    See, you can't be continuously more profitable each year AND claim piracy is destroying the industry. One of those conditions has published numbers that show the profit is still there and not even necessarily getting smaller, the "piracy killing machine" is simply the monster in your closet when you go to bed at night and leave the door open.

    Nope. The reason they don't send an officer out until you file your online report is that many people either aren't able to or are unwilling to submit the online report or they decide that the damages aren't worth the time and effort since they are unlikely to ever have their losses recovered.
    This happened to me when someone tried to steal my vehicle last summer. They were unsuccessful thankfully but I seriously doubted I would have ever recovered anything to cover the damage so I chose not to file a report. that incident will not appear in any crime statistic anywhere because a far as anyone knows - it simply never happened.

    If you follow the local political scene in any city that uses the online system you will find that "crime is way down" statistically. This pseudo "dropping" of the crime rate allows the local governments to justify cutting the funding for the regional law enforcement budget because obviously with the decrease in crime, fewer officers are needed!

    This thought has been foremost on my mind all week actually.

    I'm not in a position to take on a project of this size and scope but I would happily lend what time and resources I could. Americans protesting the corporate control of Washington D.C. is something long overdue, as we watch our liberties and freedoms trampled by those elected officials and their appointees, who are SUPPOSED to be representing the citizens but instead bow to the corporate pressure because that's where the money for re-election comes from as well as the job they will take once they leave office.

    It really is a very unfortunate time for the citizens of our country.

You have made the point I prefer right there, in that statement! I don't want to hide anything I do online and unless it is something that is actually criminal in nature, IT'S NOBODY'S FUCKING BUSINESS - ESPECIALLY MY GOVERNMENT! However, when ICE (my gov't) independently decides that some sites might have done something wrong and remove the use of those sites without ANY proof, charges, or the use of due process as guaranteed to the citizens of this country by our founding fathers then the target needs to be the government agency who has overstepped their authority and ignored the rights of the citizens for whom they serve!

    For those inclined to talk about cheese v. temperature, I have to wonder when was the last time they bit into a freshly baked pizza and did not have the cheese burn the top of their palate? Most of us have done that at least once in our lifetimes, but how many people then tried to sue the person who cooked the pizza?

    This is all Hillary Clinton's fault for passing along this old African proverb and telling us it takes a village rather than telling us we need to be responsible parents to our own children and realize they are not perfect and when they do make mistakes even if it results in injury that this is NOT a trigger to file a lawsuit.

    And this is the crux of the whole damn story - the music WAS available in the format the customer wanted, and he was WILLING to pay for it, but it was only "UNAVAILABLE" because of an artificial geographic boundary that makes absolutely zero sense in today's technological world.

    There was never any reason in the first place to have the same material, in the same format, available for sale eleven days earlier than the plastic version simply because of proximity.

    This is strictly an issue for the seller who has used a poor business model which resulted in a lost sale. So we all have proof that, on occasion, the pirated music resulted in a directly related non-sale.

    Except we've left out the part where: WE DON'T CARE IF THE INDUSTRY LOSES SALES - THEY AREN'T SELLING US WHAT WE WANT, IN THE FORMAT WE WANT IT IN, WITH THE RIGHT TO USE IT HOWEVER WE WANT - IN ANY DEVICE WE WANT, AS MANY TIMES AS WE WANT!

    I quit buying music years ago but I have yet to pirate a single song or album. I download free MP3's from Amazon when they are available and I want new music. The labels haven't lost a single sale from me because I would not have spent my money with them anyway.

    Whether you care or not, disagree or not, the world will keep on spinning and those who want music in a particular format will have it. People are even willing to pay for it!!

    Don't try to sell hot chocolate in the summer and lemonade in the winter, then have the nerve to complain about lousy sales!

    The market is there and the industry is watching it as it flies right past them. They can keep their excuses and legacy models to themselves - the world knows where and how to get what it wants if it's not made readily available in their preferred format and with their schedule in mind which is obviously not always necessarily on a shiny plastic disc in the near future during a sales window some jackass in a suit high on the tower has decided because it fit neatly on his schedule. The world has moved on and the entertainment industry has not. Good luck on your journey!

    You lost me right there, probably forever. There are more bad/poor quality TV and movies made by the "professionals" than their are good ones - unless you think more than 50% of ALL TV and 50% of ALL movies are "good" quality.

    I still maintain my position that if ANY good or reduced level of the aforementioned criminal activity actually DID occur, those poor misguided souls who led the witch hunt would be offering up some sort of evidence of their good deed. People who are elected to office thrive on these things and there is no way this one would have slipped through the cracks. Show me Joe - show me where shutting down the CL adult section ever helped even a little.

    My proof that it didn't is I personally see the same month to month crime statistics in my city and surrounding areas and this crime has not declined. Since a single source is not the best proof (for me anyway) I also witness first hand, the same amount of "traffic" in certain parts of San Diego as a I did only a year or two ago.

    I understand how easy it is to be the contrarian without a viewpoint of your own, or to even have the willingness to have your own opinion but really it does get rather old hearing someone claim there is no proof of anything simply because they wish to not believe anyone else whether it be MM or folks like myself who pass along their actual first hand knowledge. If you won't believe others then you need to go find your own proof and get away from the keyboard for a change!

    Often times you simply comes across as a child with their fingers in their ears yelling "I can't hear you! I can't hear you!".
