For that matter, why are mechanical rights actually needed when it could be handled as a subcontracted service instead? As far as I can tell, the rights market is a lot like the stock market, full of options on future potential and other properties that only represent an agreement to agree and no actual product or service.
And before you complain that I don't understand investment on future profit, has it occurred to you that select types of transactions are artificially overvalued? I think the comparison to the stock market is quite accurate.
