    I suppose for honesty and openess then I should tell you that I have pirated many things over the years, I even worked with a group for 3-4 years pirating all manner of educational material and sharing it to the "freetard" masses ;)

    I'm older these days and my needs are less, now I just don't buy from big business anymore.

    Unfortunately I'm but a consumer... but in my own way I'm hoping to enable change, I can't do it at the company so I do it via my wallet. Any organisation that acts as a gatekeeper doesn't get my cash directly, my music purchases are primarily in pc formats and I buy from artists and bands direct, no itunes, amazon etc. At parties I'll play stuff that no-one has heard of or stream music from sites like Grooveshark/Spotify. Physical products i pick up 2nd hand form ebay or charity shops. Lots of my friends thought I was nuts hunting through the local charity shops for a Bluray of Avatar... when I got it for ?3.50 they started to join me hunting for stuff too!

    Yes, a better job at suing their fanbase, at entering into patent wars, at using legal frameworks inproperly to stifle free speech, at spending vast quantities of cash on legal teams rather than innovation and R&D teams, blah, blah, etc, etc.

    There are many posts on TD highlighting success stories where people and companies have embraced different business models are we expected to provide you wtih links? or can you do your own digging?

    It's called "presence", new VOIP systems not only allow people to talk to each other, they also let you know if someone is behind their desk, what building or office they are in based on VLAN/IP identification, whether they are available for IM/Texting and also emails answer machine messages straight to your email inbox. Having spent a few days talking to a company that have recently installed a new system that provides everything just mentioned they report back that internall calls have dropped to virtually nothing, and most people (reception desk excluded) don't answer their phone but pick up their messages via their inbox.

    People still think that they have to have a phone, give it 10-20 years and they'll be gone.

    I believe that Eminem is quite a successful artist who has quite a following, the label that he belongs to is currently risking what exactly? That his next album won't sell over 700,000 copies in the US in it's first week?

    You cannot use your "removal of their tools" arguement if you do not apparantly grasp how the internet works. Removing their doamin name simply removed "the friendly name" of their site, it didn't stop the actual site from functioning via another address system. I'm trying hard to figure some anolgy for this and at the moment all I have is that this is akin to taking away one set of keys to a cocaine dealers car in the full knowledge that he has another set.... not perfect and definately not fully thought through.

    Yes, yes, yes... clean up all the websites, BBS, newspapers, etc, etc and all the bad things in the world will go away.

    No more paedophile rings/networks, no more prostitution, blah, blah, blah.

    ooops! Sorry just went off on a complete fruitloop there!

    These things happen, you cannot stop them from happening no matter how much you think you can, even in the biggest police state where everyone is monitored 24/7/365 bad things will happen.

    and with their inability to make leaps and innovate/adapt we only have to wait for their eventual demise.

    I was taking stock yesterday and realised that I haven't purchased a single album/song from a label this year, all direct from bands and artists. Books still get bought from publishers so I hope that more writers start to release themselves.

    They aren't even targeting the most prolific of downloaders, they've long since moved on to other methods of downloading where they don't have to share back, where their traffic is encrypted and the servers they log in to and downlod from have their logs scrubbed every 120 minutes.

    So where were you when the 8 track manufacturers folded? People aren't paying for the disc they are paying for its contents like you said, only thing is the actual container is now obsolete, like the 8 track cassettes and tapes that came before them. Unbfortunately the "industry" has always had a physical product, a tape or a disc, now they don't, the film/game/tv programme/music is now just 1's and 0's... and therefore infinite and no longer scarce.

    What does "fair amount" mean? can you provide some data? maybe a pie chart? I mean it's a bit subjective and I'm much better with percentages and numbers.
