    What happened?

What happened was the "War on Terror". War means martial law. The PNAC people very quickly realized the unlimited potential, political and economical of such law. This simple formula created a situation that made any return to pre-9/11 extremely difficult if not impossible. The war has now to run its course as has always been the case historically. And it does. Generating enormous profits on its way.

I can do both (or any other method such as 36*20 + 36*4 or whatever) because I learned the essence of multiplication. And you learn that by learning the tables. I also learned Latin but never spoke it. What I learned was the essence of language.
    Wax on, wax off.

Secret is becoming sloppy because it has become, like all the rest, a commodity.
Estimates place the number of people having security clearance to about 2.4 millions. Among those, the Washington Post estimated that about 850,000 people have top level security clearance.

Past a certain point, secrecy becomes spectacle. Just like it did in Stalinist administrations.

The time when "intellectual property" takes off is also the time when Microsoft takes off with a product that, without a from of legal definition/protection, would have been replicated ad libitum

There are lots of TOEs out there, but the most beautiful, to my minimally conversant eyes, is Antony Garett Lisi's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antony_Garrett_Lisi)

    ?

You would think that by now there would be such as thing as a decentralized search engine application type-thing... Is there one?

That's pretty typical of the current French government to push useless stuff just because of shock value. Like many governments today, it lives off of shock value, regardless of the content. It's like glucose for the metabolism.
More generally, I think it's healthy for the www to be challenged by stupidity, control and other forms of recuperations: it grows from it.

Couldn't it be something like a hybrid between SETI and anon/onion/stealthnet thingies?

Sorry to state the obvious, but if so-called "American Journalism" was doing its job there would be no Wikileaks at all. There would not be explosive release of hundreds of thousands of documents at one time but ongoing, persistent and documented investigation and monitoring of the administration.
So, yeah, that makes complete sense to blame Wikileaks that grows in the dirt that is so conveniently left unturned.
Where was the NYT when the WMD manipulation and the shining path of war was pushed down this nation's throat by the previous administration? It was obedient and very silent. It was "grappling with the hardest issues of the day" by bending over.

True. Doing what he does, and for a while now, he knows or I certainly hope he does, that the Wikileaks project, or any project going against the separated power, must not be equated to any single person. With that in mind, what happens to him or what he does with his genital apparatus is completely indifferent.
As for his safety, he certainly took a great risk by poking the Mafia Boss(es). Lots are dead for having done that on a much smaller scale and to much smaller bosses.
