I also finally bit the bullet and made a profile last year, after at least 4 years of lurking, and oddly i never commented anonymously back then at all, but now with an account I comment both logged in and also sometimes anonymously (mhen I'm too lazy to log in). so it definitely made me more engaged overall to have an account!
Alito pauses lower court ruling that would have blocked Texas redistricting
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito put a temporary hold on a lower court order that would have blocked Texas from rolling out its new congressional map.
Alito did not explain his decision to impose an administrative stay, which is a "time out" to freeze the status quo in place to allow the justices time to consider the matter and says nothing about the actual merits of the dispute.

To be clear, that last scenario is less likely than the first one, but regardless it will be interesting to see how this emergency appeal of the Texas maps will interact with the pending case on racial gerrymandering writ large. Especially when it is Trump demanding the Texas maps, and they hate disappointing him.
The only real guarantee is they will do whatever gives them the most chance of retaining power... that and we know they will finish gutting the VRA, as Roberts has had it out for the law his entire career, and now spent over a decade chipping away at it, and Thomas also hates it. So it's just a question of when, but this is the "no fucks left to give" court, so it's definitely gonna happen.
the most likely outcome is they will stay (put on hold) Judge Brown's order via an unsigned (and un-commented on) shadow docket order, and then leave the case hanging long enough that Texas gets to use the new maps for the midterms. Then sometime next year, when it's too late for the original maps to be used (see above comments about the candidates filing deadline), they will go "oops yeah this map is obviously bad racism, we chuck the maps".
how do we know this? they did the exact same thing with Louisiana (IIRC) maps before the 2020 election. And I believe there was another example more recently, tho I can't remember the details.
TBH the only way I see them actually choosing to over-rule the maps before that, is if they decide the new maps are actually bad for Republicans (which there has been much speculation that they might be, due to how hard Latinos swung back to the Democrats in the recent elections, even in very red districts, and thus the new maps could end up diluting safe red seats and backfiring on the Rs).
So IF they think the new maps are actually too risky, they could over-rule them and then bask in the headlines about how "reasonable and moderate" they are for a a few weeks, before THEN overturning the VRA right after that, in a case that just went to oral arguments in Oct, and which is widely seen as thier chosen vehicle to gut the last remaining protections against racial gerrymandering). And they won't give a shit if the hypocrisy is glaring, because they only care about power and keeping it. These people feel zero shame.
That's my point, is any of the EU customers would be bound by GDPR, Canadians by the Privacy Act, etc. and I couldn't find anything in the various coverage about whether all of the 20 million chats are confirmed to only be from Americans
Is it even clear that those 20 million chats are from only American customers? what if some of them are EU residents?? or Canadian or Australian? There's no way that this kind of disclosure without notice+consent could possibly comply with privacy regs. in all of the other countries that DO actually have privacy laws...
well fair enough... he is such a sad pathetic POS that making fun of him is like shooting fish in a barrel. the line between sarcasm and pity is a fine one indeed.
but yeah, he does have the codes and we both know him and Hegseth would happily fire all of the modern 'Hering' types in an instant (assuming any are even left at this point) and then dox and have the DOJ persecute them just to be next level douchecanoes. so for that reason I dont think the guy deserves to be given any of our "pity the senile/demented old man who falls for stupid shit online" energy, because if he would just accept that's where he is at in his life and give up power to enjoy his final days in quiet [golden] luxury, then all of North America would be so much better off, but alas.
well said, as someone who has supported multiple friends who were suicidal, both those who attempted and failed, those who succeeded, and those who it didn't go past thoughts, these things are very complex. The ones who were determined to do it, they found a way, long before AI or even the internet were a thing. The ones who survived are the ones who got interventions in time and then had serious (and ongoing) treatment to address the underlying issues in thier lives, and I am blessed they are still with us. These things are not easy.
Yes! it reminds me of the same thing! these psychology words have real academic meanings and yet as they have become more understood in the wider culture, they have become overused and abused of thier real meanings - the paralle is very apt re: rhe way that these LLMs use smart soundings words that mixup and conflate real concepts into a mishmash that sounds smart only to those unable (or unwilling) to take the time to understand the differences.
just wanted to say this discussion was fascinating, even for someone who knows nothing about coding etc.! And quite civil to boot.
whoever was saying recently that there wasn't enough "tech" left in the "techdirt" clearly was wrong, cuz this discussion gets deep into the "dirt" of "tech"!

We need Shadow Docket reform - they should limit what types of cases the Roberts Court can take on the emergency docket in the first place, and require fully signed preliminary rulings be released within 24 hours of any emergency decisions, and maybe even require them to hold full hearings about all decisions they make on the shadow docket before the end of thier term, and if that means cutting into thier summer holidays because it adds stuff to thier calendar, or if they make rulings in summer and then have to come back to hold proper hearings, then so be it. they get more than enough time off as it is.
and we also should outlaw the ability for the administration to jump over the appeal courts without good reasons... all on top of expanding the court, putting in term limits, making it take a lot more standard types of appeals (less ability for them to pick and choose just the juiciest political cases) and also put in strict ethics reforms that bar gifts/political influence/grift by the justices, with a mechanism for it to be enforced and the justices disbarred if they flout it.
Damn that sucks! In Canada we got rid of phones being locked years ago, but I remember the dark ages before that, it was a HUGE pain in the ass!
I feel for you guys that this was so close to being a reality for you guys across the board, just to have it yanked away by these greedy SOBs!
I haven't seen it suggested much, but surely it must be possible that Waltz et. al only added this 3rd party app to thier signal chats after the original "Signalgate/leaking of war plans" debacle?
if so then it would mean that they after got their wrists slapped for using signal with auto-deleting messages, one of them had the bright idea to use this extra app and they all went "yeah, good idea! problem solved, it's secure now!" and fist-bumped and tapped a new keg to celebrate, all the while thier chats are even LESS secure then they were originally!
this is so strange, I had no trouble cancelling my Uber One subscription, I've done it multiple times directly through thier app... cancelling my internet subscription at Shaw, so I could switch to a much cheaper small ISP, now that was a HUGE pain in the ass.
Why not go after Big Telecom or those scammy Gyms who make it impossible to cancel?? This is so clearly just to target Musk's competition, it's so lame.
welcome to techdirt!

Musk and DOGE have entered the chat...
one word*: "USAID" + + two emojis: "🔗🪚" = Musk & DOGE (*yes I know it's an acronym, but it sounds better this way)
CALLED IT

the sad thing is that they are most likely to NOT provide ANY excuses

you forgot the /s tag on that last paragraph...
it's not in bad taste when he is the president and has the nuclear codes

I don't have the answers about AI and it's creator's complicity, but my point was just that I appreciated your nuanced response.

and whatever will make him money - he has profited off of "vaccine injury" lawsuits for many years
