She didn't, actually. Sony recently converted its store to Epub, and that means any of the ebook readers that support Adobe DE could have read the books she bought. All she had to do was download them again.
This is a case of a customer who should have done some research.

Yes, in most cases you can download the firmware update and do it your self, but the fact remains that Sony didn't release this firmware update into the wild.

The Sony PRS-500 is most certainly _not_ a connected device. And she had to send it in to get the recent firmware update; Sony wouldn't release it.
