Consider the latest example of a country going down this path--Venezuela. How can a govenment supposedly for the people allow the late leader's daughted amass a $4 billion fortune.

  Well said. Given the availability of high quality online computer science classes, why paid through your behind to fund useless college administrators. Stanfor offers Ullman's class on automata theory, so you can even get into the theoretical aspects if you want to (I highly suggest this class). The possible downside is "certification". Human Resource departments use this sort of thing as a filter. It would seem that a person interested in this sort of approach would have to develop a portfolio fo software to give to a hiring manager.

  Attribute it to lawyers. A police department gets sued by a family member of someone who dies in a hostage situation because they claim the the police department did not do all that in necessary to save the life of the victim. All it takes is one of these kind of suits (and there probably has been one) and to avoid it police will over react.

  Not a problem, really, the IOC will make the State of Washington change all the names. Oh yeah, heaven help anyone who tries to revive "Olympia Beer" brand. The so-called "Olympic Movement" is a farce, and nothing but a means to get money, sort of like all the other international sports governing bodies like FIFA (football), FIA (auto racing), UCI (cycling). Generaly a bunch of self-interested bureaucrats (and generally European) who mulct these sports for all they are worth.

  The word theory, unfortunately, does not have a single meaning. On one hand there is the usage of a proven scientific body of facts like "Number Theory" This is not to say that the body of facts explains every thing. Then there is the meaning equivalent in many respect to the word "philosophy" examples: "Marxist Theory". So, the theory of multiverses or dark matter or dark energy are hypotheses that attempt to explain observations or failings of a current theory. These maybe consistent with our current understanding, but are unproven. Unfortunately, some of these hypotheses must be agrees to, or you will not be able to get any funding for your research, try to get funding for work that attempts to disprove "string Theory".

  Why the scare quotes around scandal? Afraid the the Clinton machine will get you, or just habit. Interesting that both NYT and WaPo have reported this. More evidence of how manifestly corrupt and unqualified Ms Clinton is. She should stick to overpriced contentless speaches at $200,000 a whack. But I suppose the brass ring of being the first womyn president is just to hard to resist.

  As I mentioned above, I believe that federal law which governs interstate matters is single party--only one party (you) has to agree to being recorded.
