    A Description from a 9 year old

This is a description from a 9 year old
    https://np.reddit.com/r/daddit/comments/2yi6xu/heres_how_my_9year_explained_net_neutrality_to/

My 9-year old son spends a lot of time online and recently came to me asking what Net Neutrality meant. I explained it the best I could. I just okay with current political events and he had a lot of questions. Had to actually look up some answers.
I recently overheard him explaining it to one of his friends, much better than I could, like this:
Pretend ice cream stores gave away free milkshakes. But you had to buy a straw to drink them. But that's okay, because you still get free milkshakes. One day you're drinking a free milkshake and you look down and the guy that sold you the straw is pinching it almost shut. You can still get your milkshake, but it's really hard and takes a lot longer.
So you say, "Hey! Stop that!" And the straw guy says, "NO! Not until the ice cream store pays me money." And you say, "But I already paid you money for the straw." And the straw guy says, "I don't care. I just want more money."
    I think he nailed it.

I concur with the others AT&T is only trying to force current landline subscribers to more expensive alternatives

I live 1 hour drive from Sacramento, CA in a semi-rural area outside of a main city. This group of houses that used to be a farm has a total population around 3 - 4 k and 2/3 of these people have no DSL!!!! They are forced to use ISDN, Satellite, or if they are lucky and live at the top of a hill have some wireless reception. I am lucky since the growth in this enclave forced AT&T to put in a new exchange, and I was close enough to acquire the DSL. For 30 per month I have a whopping 750Kbits per second download speed. you read that right !!!! 750Kbits per second download speed and I am lucky. The cable company Suddenlink does provide a comparable service so AT&T can claim there is competition in the area !!!
This is a 1 hour drive from Sacramento, CA !!!
When I visit Europe, India, and South KOrea I brag about what their internet provides to others, just to get somekind of fire under the politicians who allowed this sorry state of affairs. MOre competition , more choices, NO MONOPOLIES AT ALL !!!!

Idenetity Cards are required in CA and Other States

Wether you drive a car or not California, and other states issue Identity cards similar to Driver's Licenses. So people can be identified by Police for offenses other than vehicle offenses. Also they serve as a valid Identity cards for Checks at a store, at least in California

If not for this article I would never have learned about Anodyne

If not for this article, I would not have searched for the download.
If not for the free download I would not have tried the game.
If I had not tried the game I would not have paid for the game.
If not for the free download I would not have told my son, and several colleagues about the game.
See Nice NERDS can and sometimes do win !!

Hurrah Hurrah Someone who appears to be on my side

I Agree whole heartedly with this person, since we allowed our government to carve out little monopolies all over the United States, we should definitely allow this same government who is fed millions in cash from these same companies to "increase competition". Who ever believes this will actually happen is either an idealistic na?ve person, or just totally clueless.
While I agree more competition is needed, and will provide relief I believe that the break up of Ma Bell should be looked at far more closely, and learned from so we don't repeat those mistakes.
Where will this new competition come from ? Maybe Google, Maybe Apple, maybe someplace else, but asking the government to force competition into the mix will be a regrettable decision, if history is any teacher.

Area of Interest for Energy Coal Air Fuel Cells

Back in 1990's I was involved at SRI International with Molten Carbonate Coal Fuel Cells. The patents have long since expired with no commercialization. With all of our coal and the abundant Sodium Potassium and lithium carbonate available around the World. I would suggest that some form of money be put into this effort so that burning of coal and the required flue gas clean and poisioning of our atmosphere would be decreased. The ash is still a problem, but no sulfur, Mercury or other metals are ever put into the air, because there is no actual burning of the coal.

    90% of users only download

Think about a zdnet, or CNet,snapfiles.com or NBC.Com what percentage of people ONLY Download from those sites ?? 90 - 95 - 99.9 . Now it is true that zdnet provides files, so may we should be concerned about them as well. Downloads from a web site are no indicator of wether the site is infringing or not???

5 of my clients have moved their websites off shore

I have 5 companies for whom I write software and maintain websites for various purposes. All sell items imported from various countries, using the open trade, or fair trade model. All these websites import form Africa, the Far East etc. They all expressed fear and loathing over the USA government moves, and have requested me to arrange to move them to the .to, .me or some other off shore registry away from ICANN. The move is already happening, there is no if, but how many will run in fear. I agree with the famous quote "I love my country, but fear my government"

Why I NEVER talk to Bank of America Representatives

I have re-financed my house 3 times in the 15 years I have "owned" this house in each case the original Mortgage was with Bank of America. After the first time in 2001 when I was quoted a rate that required points, and was 0.5% higher than what I received through other loan brokers, I have never gone back to Bank of America for anything. In each and ever case my loan was subsequently bought by Bank of America. The last time when I went to Bank of America in 2009 when interest rates were really low, they did exactly what this couple found. But I caught what the rep was trying to do and immediately stopped the process, and asked for a supervisor. I WAS HUNG UP ON. I went to quicken loans, and refinanced through them. After 2 weeks my loan was bought by Bank of America. I loathe Bank of America, and will never do any business directly with them ever again.

Yes Please Please Free Us from our Government

The current attitude of my friends and myself is yes please please free us from these chains we have allowed to be placed on us. They burdensome, we are weary of our Big Brother Corporate Government. But because of apathetic non involvement we have fulfilled the quote. Leo Tolstoy "War and Peace" All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing” http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Edmund_Burke#Probable_misattribution

    Re: Accurate

What about me, who use the torrents to provide Open source software like Ubuntu, and other business oriented software like that at my BLOG
    http://www.lockergnome.com/microface/
I have a contract for up to a certain bandwidth with minimums built into the Quality of Service, and I pay through the nose as a business. I have no meter, except what I can prove when AT&T breaks the contract, which I have proven to my satisfaction 3 times a month. Do you know what they do. NOTHING ! I get screwed, because even though I live only 1 hours drive from Sacramento, I have no Cell phone reception From any carrier, and have had DSL from AT&T only the last 4 years.
I get no help from my congress people, I get no help from FCC, I get no help period. I have a contract, which I have tried to enforce, and only by paying a lawyer a minimum of 10K can I enforce that contract. Under no circumstances will I ever trust any large TELCO/ISP they are nothing but crooks that take your money and break their contracts and then give you the finger when they break the contracts they themselves wrote!

How Can I Ditch LandLine When Cell Does Not Work ?

I am a software engineer with nearly 25 years of experience living 1 hour's drive from Sacramento, CA, and I still have no cell phone reception in or around my house. I have to walk at least 200 yds up a hill before my son has even 2 bars of service for ANY wireless provider. This community of nearly 15K people still has only spotty DSL for the last several years, and many individuals can only get51K baud on their MODEMS !!! What is happening by the telco's to wean me off my landline. NOTHING AT&T, Verizon, Sprint none work in this area, except in the downtown area, and have no plans to work. So in the mean time it is quite a common site to see people sitting in their cars on the highways, or roads just talking on their cell phones, because they have no service in their homes, or anywhere else they are willing to walk.

What are my Options ? NONE !!!

I live in Grass Valley, CA a 1 hour drive from Sacramento, CA and the only provider of DSL is AT&T, and they haven't increased their coverage, or speed or performed any upgrades except in pricing, for the last 7 years. I am one of the lucky 1/3 that was provided DSL when AT&T was forced to put in a new "box" in this subdivision where I live. It still took me circulating a petition to get AT&T to actually turn on the DSL for this part of this subdivision of Grass Valley. As far as I know the other 2/3 of this subdivision still have no DSL, and in some sections the phone lines are so bad that households can not even maintain a fast POTS line, they are stuck with 26 KBaud!! Even though I can walk to their properties in less than 5 minutes !! Until something is done about competition there will be no incentive for this telcos, cablecos to actually provide a service !!!

Hooray For Wilson, I wish My city could do this!!

I live in the foothills of California, a 1 hour drive from Sacramento, California. WE have a choice of AT&T DSL in some areas, while many many areas have no broadband at all. The only reason we have DSL in some areas, was because I circulated a petition and had many of the residents sign up, when AT&T HAD to put in a new junction box. That was nearly 7 years ago, and to this day despite promises and more promises 1/2 the subdivision where I live still have no DSL or Cable !!! I wish my town, had this kind of moxy !!!

Dell Phones Don't Work Where I Live

I live an hour drive outside of Sacramento, California. I Live less than 30 minutes form Roseville, California, And less than 20 minutes from Auburn, California. But I still have no cell phone reception in my house! My son's cell phone only works in the small cities that exist in this area, while the thousands of outlying houses have no cell phone reception. I have tried to use the 100 dollar cell amplifiers, like ZBoost personal etc, but all have failed. I have neighbors that have bought boosters that cost 300 dollars, and some still have little or not cell phone reception. I have had DSL, from AT&T and no one else for 5 years !! Still no cell phone reception!!

There is no competition in my area

I Live 1 hour outside of Sacramento, CA and I can tell you that over half the population is still on Dial-up or cable because they have no access to DSL. In many cases they can not use satellite simply because there is no proper exposure, or the exposure is masked by trees.
The only competition here is to increase our rates every year for the same bandwidth, with no further coverage.
The AT&T company even went so far as to tell the business I work in that is 1700 feet from the exchange that even though we had a useable DSL connection, before that since this company is outside the 1,500 radius to the exchange box that AT&T would no longer provide DSL. Thus this company was forced to "Upgrade" to a leased line at twice the expense. Since there is no other provider of internet services in this entire area, even though this is a soft industrial park with over 3 dozen companies, we are SOL, we can pay up or have no internet connection. So don't talk about competition to me, it does not exist anywhere in this area.

I spent 16 yr building a college fund, it is now gone

I am a working software engineer that placed anywhere from 100 to 200 per month into a mutual fund for the last 16 years since the birth of my son. There was a 1 1/2 year gap back 3 years ago when i was laid off, but otherwise, I thought everything was OK. Then at the begining of the year I moved some of the international stuff that was not yielding anything great to less risky blue chips. So in the mutual fund there was about 50,000 dollars for my son's college fund at the age of 16.
In the last 4 months that value has been reduced to less than 10,000. So 16 years of saving, do what was right has been nearly wiped out in less time than my statements. Now you and I both know that the CEO's, CFO's, and other corporate bigwigs will have golden, or silver parachutes clauses in their contracts, and the companies shareholders, will have their bite at the Government teat, since the companies assets will be acquired by the government. So my question, is where is my reward for being a thoughtful, hard working software engineer ? My reward is to see all these politicians, and corporate cronies be paid to just leave the area, with nothing more than a few millions to call their own for their efforts.
My son could go to college, if not for these politicians, My son could go to trade school, if not for these politicians, and corporate fat cats.
I am pissed, I am mad, and not matter how I vote, there is nothing I can do!! I saved, I worked and now after 16 years I have virtually nothing to give to my son, to show for all my effort. That is real!!!
Try being in my shoes, or in the shoes of the waitress down th street, who saved and invested and is now left with little to nothing to show for years of working, and saving. She and I should have bought the Fancy car; I drive a Ford Focus for the last 3 years. There is no reason to support these politicians, these corporate oil, pharma, or other companies.

Goggle is not the problem the ISP's and the Govt are the problem

IF we look back through the short history of the commercial internet we can see that the telecom, cable, and wireless companies, have always been granted limited monopolies, or at most duoploies in most urban areas. So how does the government going after Google, which has managed to grab, or earn a fairly large majority of the advertisement money surprise anyone. Especially after Google, and several other companies organized a campaign to bring this situation to the forefront and make "Net Neutrality" an actual meaningful political issue. I am surprised that the government has waited this long to actually go after, Google. The governments plan is fairly obvious at this point. Breakup Google, or at least make the company submit, so that the creation of tarriff to further feed the telecom, cable companies can go forward without the hue and cry that previously threatened the political establishment. The government is increasingly becoming an arm of the large multinational corporations in their quest for more power, money. I am saddened that this will further erode any "rights" we have, unless we all just begin to ignore the laws, in which case we will become subject to the rule of the strongest. So I have no solutions only warnings, that "Big Brother" society is coming later than 1984, but that society does not include "double think" but control of what we see and hear.
