I am skeptical of the success of their paywall but the activation fee does make some sense. If their goal is to avoid people subscribing only when needed, the $5 fee may be enough to convince people to stay subscribed month to month.

Isn't surge pricing based on when demand outpaces supply? Uber uses surge pricing to encourage more drivers. In the middle of the night, demand may be low but supply could be even lower. This could create a situation where travelers coming in may still need to pay higher rates to encourage enough supply at off-peak times.

An IP address is not perfect and there are ways to spoof/hide it. However, in the context of this forum, it would provide a good proxy to identifying a single user.
BTW, I am not advocating the listing of user IPs. Just using the IP address to create a unique nickname for the thread.
I have always respected Techdirt's policy of anonymous commenters and wish more more sites offered such functionality.
One feature request:
Would it be possible to identify anonymous commenters per story? For example, the 1st anonymous commenter to a story would be labeled as "Anonymous Coward #1" for all posts relating to the that story. The 2nd anonymous commenter would labeled as "Anonymous Coward #2", etc.
It is frustrating to read the commentary and not know if the anonymous comments are coming from one person or from 20.

What is really funny is that this is in a trade publication that gives away its printed version. Maybe the editor should have talked to the publishing/advertising side first to understand his own companies business model.
Great to see a thorough rebuttal to Ben's article. I too am big fan of his and was quite surprised when he posted this.
Real competition is best the solution but without title II, we may be left with no options to enforce net neutrality until new law is passed.

The suppression term came directly from a a senior Trump official. You can debate if this is truly suppression but it is the campaign using the term.

After cutting cable 9 years ago I just signed up again this past week. This is due to it being cheaper to get cable with internet than just internet.
Was almost tempted to tell the the installer they could skip hooking up the cable box as I have no desire to watch 20+ min of commercials every hour.

Without competition, there is no incentive to offer a better service. Only the loss of customer's will really ever effect this type of change.

Yes, most Uber drivers I know contract with multiple companies. They will keep multiple apps/phones open and take the first ride request they get.
