  Morality

  Humanity, morality, however you want to describe it always has a place. Just because this is a tech blog does not mean you should confine yourselves. If the Trump supporters don't like that you point out the insanity they can always read breitbart or foxnews.

  Language skills

  The whole thing looks like it was written by someone with limited English skills, as in foreign and with little practice or coaching.
  
  Either Burlington farmed this out or somebody didn't like a story about them and decided to impersonate the cops. If it is the second case they will then have the Burlington cops after them for a federal violation.

  Nobody ever seems to ask these bozos the obvious question.
  Why don't they get the NSA to design this magical system?
  It would have to be open source so that anyone can implement and rigorously test it but that is not hard.
  
  The NSA has a Lot of very smart people. Why can't they 'nerd harder'?
  
  Or maybe it's not really that easy.

  Amazement

  I am always amazed at the near total lack of foresight by the engineering teams that put these things together. There is little to no security built in. They always seem surprised when somebody hacks into their pretty little gadget.
  
  Who writes the specifications for these things, The three Stooges? Was the requirement deleted by management? Was the entire project done by recent graduates with no adult supervision?
  
  Inquiring minds want to know!

  The real problem is not the court.
  The real problem is the existence of that law.
  The judge is constrained to follow the law, no matter how stupid it is.

  They should pass a law that will make automotive executives that value cost savings over rigorous engineering criminally liable for the failures designed into their vehicles.

  It makes sense

  They invited the law enforcement 'experts'.
  They knew that they would be presented with a load of pure hogwash.
  They separated the two groups to prevent the obvious embarrassment of the committee if the 'experts' were called out for their stupidity immediately.
  
  Same old circus, just new clowns.

  Who are they?

  I looked up the Authors Guild.
  According to their website they have 804 members.
  I scrolled through several pages and did not recognize a single name. Maybe I'm not reading the 'good stuff'. I tend to be in the 100 books per year range.
  
  Why don't each of those authors simply ask Google to not index their books, then Google would not be competing with them.
  
  If the are hard up for money maybe they should get a different publisher, a less greedy one. Take you price point down just a little. Get Amazon and Barnes & Noble to offer your first book at half price for a week as one of their deals to get readers hooked on your fabulous work. I have tried several authors that way and have bought more. All e-books, with no hard copy the price can come down and the author can get a better percentage.

  Even if he knew he was sharing with the telco as part of the service agreement, I doubt that he consented to sharing with the police through the IMSI.
  
  The police inserted their equipment in place of the cell tower. That goes beyond simply tapping a phone line which does require a warrant.

  Plug the dike

  Netflix has to accept the regional licensing dike to offer content. The VPNs keep poking holes in the dike. Netflix pounds corks into the holes they find. They know it is a futile effort but they must do it to please the technically challenged suppliers.
  
  The fun part comes when one of the creator/suppliers figures it all out and drops the regional foolishness and releases worldwide on the same day. How the rest react to the heresy will be interesting. Bring popcorn.

  Two possibilities

  I see two possibilities here.
  1. Chaum is an incredibly naive nerd that really does not understand the actual issue.
  2. He is not getting the attention he things he should for his work and figures that his system will be a wonderful pr tool.
  Possibly both.
  
  Besides, how do you select the nine persons with keys? How do you guarantee they are not compromised. Any reliance on the human elements is doomed to fail.

  Lethal weapons

  You cannot be too careful about those office supplies. A sharpened #2 pencil can be deadly if used to stab between the ribs. It punctures the heart and they will bleed out before anyone can save them. I don't recall which ribs, I saw it in a movie decades ago.
  
  The damage that can be done with a letter opener is also scary. Then there is a network cable used as a garrote.
  
  The world is Not a safe place.
