    Was reading earlier today, some sleuths on Twitter have already done a bit of publicly sourced intel gathering already and it strongly points at Afghanistan. Apparently, people in NatSec jobs put this crap on their LinkedIn profiles and publicly posted resumes/CVs.

    Funny, I found just the solution to this problem...

    Last week, another blog I follow had just the thing for this sort of issue:

    Basically it is a portable wireless access point and mass storage device powered by a battery and concealed within a small bag/purse. Then they make use of a phone app that constantly mirrors the photo directory on your phone.

    Some people in the comments have apparently built a similar system using some of the SD cards with built in wireless to give this functionality to digital cameras.

    Except who do you get to prosecute the DoJ? This is why nothing will change: there is rampant lawlessness and no one with the power to stop it gives a crap. If this doesn't fit the definition of "high crimes and misdemeanors" I don't know what does.

    IANAL, but... Isn't copyright infringement civil? "Preponderance of the evidence" is typically the standard in civil trials, sadly, not "innocent until proven guilty".

    Also, the Egyptian hieroglyph for "M" may be an owl but this appears much different than the hieroglyph owl pictured. You can't copyright an idea or historical fact (the hieroglyph for "M"), but you copyright a particular expression of an idea. All those Instagram pics w/ the detailed feathers, "OVO" for a face, etc., look like the same particular expression of the [arguably public domain idea] of the hieroglyphic owl.

    Funny question: If Baden Baden wins on copyright, and if Drake has a trademark on the co-joined "OVO" that makes up the owls face then couldn't he also counter sue over trademark infringement? And then they could enjoin each other from legally producing that particular pendant?

    I've lived through dial-up, Southwestern Bell DSL (now AT&T, which they are trying SO hard to finish killing) and Time-Warner before switching to Grande. Paying about $50/mo for 50mbps. Service has been rock solid, through two moves.

    I just hope with their aggressive expansion and attempt to crack the Austin market they stay the good regional ISP they've been thus far.

    You throw around this phrase "Obama Derangement Syndrome"... I do not think it means what you think it means.

    Let me put it another way: by so casually throwing around that phrase you make it sound like the choice is either you support the lawlessness of the USG and the National Security State just because there is a Democrat in office or you're an ignorant, talk-radio-listening, ditto-head conservative?

    Make yourself clear. From your other posts it just seems like you're taking all this criticism of the government as a personal affront against the President, who you have the utmost faith in, and you're trying to make this about the perceived political views of the people bringing this information to light. Do you have no capacity for nuance?

    That's something I agree with. What the hell does the Democrats and the organized portions of the Left in the US even stand for anymore? The whole place has been hollowed out and sold to the highest bidder and instead of "Change we can believe in" we get the same rat-fucking (to use your word) DINOs selling us out.

    I will never understand the level of stupidity that comes with the partisan hacks that circle their wagons around authoritarian government overreach just because it's Democrats calling the shots.

    He railed against the Bush administration for their civil liberties record just as much as he does against the Obama administration. Just like the line from The Who song, "... meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

    "... libertarian assholes..." indeed. FFS, he gave the keynote at the annual Socialism Conference in Chicago in 2013.

    So, tear down the man w/ ad hominem attacks instead of addressing the issues.. because any politician who doesn't address the issues deserves what's coming to them in the upcoming election... regardless of party.

    Let me be bipartisan and say, to bad we don't have a chance of losing Feinstein (D) this election cycle but at least we have a chance of losing Mike Rogers (R).

    Even the DoJ has a hard time following the law, let alone enforcing it. What makes anyone think they'd slap the hand of their slightly more grievous little brother? Hell, they're probably cheer-leading for the NYPD, maybe they can get some good precedent out of it.

    They never really went away, they just dropped out of the mainstream music biz (like they were ever really there to begin with). They've also done what a lot of other artists have done, started a label and produced others who share their style. They even signed Vanilla Ice for his "comeback" a few years back.

    This is not to mention all the side projects, B-Movies and pro-wrestling.

    I'm surprised this is the first we're read about ICP on Techdirt as their story fits very well with some of the themes on here of getting screwed by the man, building a fanbase anyway, and seeing success, even if it isn't "mainstream".

    Hell, at the pace the appellate courts run, he'll be out before this is settled.

    Yea, outsourcing.

    As Taylor highlights, the University of Calgary sent a letter to its staff saying that a company "representing" Elsevier, was demanding that they take down all such articles on the University's network.

    Sounds like they're outsourcing their enforcement. Whether or not it's a legitimate mistake (like the incedents of media companies issuing takedown notices w/ Google on their own websites) or they're testing the waters, using the outsourced company so they can later disavow them, we'll probably never know.

    Also, something else to point out: there are a lot of theoretical attacks and some evidence of actual exploits in the wild that target the BIOS and firmware of x86, amd64, and ia64 based systems. Why rely on the OS to ex-filtrate data when you can have the network card do it directly?

    Hell, Intel's newest processors support microcode updates, basically applying a patch to the processor. Exploiting the processor's microcode updates would be in undetectable for normal people. Oh the updates are signed with an encryption key only Intel has, but in light of the NSA disclosures, is there any reason to trust them not to hand it over?

    Amazed and Amused.

    I've read through approximately half the article, and I am both amused and amazed. Firstly, it's all very SRS BIZNES over some very silly things.

    Firstly, targets: WoW and SL? Really? SL has been dying for years. There are a few people who still make money hand-over-fist, but from my recent experience LL's been strangling their golden goose for a while.

    Tracking the users of World of Warcraft, while being the biggest MMO for a while, the RL motivational force of WoW's player base is, in my experience, lacking. If they wanted to scope a bunch of fanatic terrorists I'm surprised they didn't infiltrate some of the corps in Eve Online.

    There have been plans of RL skullduggery to sabotage groups in Eve. Players trying to hire a guy to cut the power of someone in another country to leave his Titan vulnerable. Heists that can be counted IRL thousands of USD. I'm surprised Goonfleet's suicide attacks on mining barges doesn't raise a red flag in some government DB. Oh, and their masterful forum propaganda! If I were an editor for Inspire, these are the guy's I'd want to recruit as copy writers and graphic designers.

Give those rooms full of lobbyists enough red meat to feed their confirmation bias that the military-industrial complex and government can do no wrong.

    Maybe he'll get an adjunct professorship at an Ivy League school to teach a political science, law, or ethics class.

    Apples to Apples, DRM by another name...

    So, a friend of mine who is a long time fan of Rockstar & the GTA franchise is staying away from GTA5 because of the online component Rockstar Social Club is just that terrible.

    He's owned Max Payne 3 since launch. Bought it on Steam. Hasn't been able to play it for the last several months due to having to sign on to that online component. Contacted Rockstar's tech support, they asked him for a photo of his CD & box... for a game bought on Steam. Whatever they do to try and fix it wipes all his saves and stats... and it still won't let him play.

    That said, it's not like EA is any better. They actually got a game they had put on sale on Steam over the holidays YANKED because it didn't work with out the online component... that EA can't fix.

    Honestly, IMHO, the sooner this plague of "always online" games and "cloud only" saves die, the better.
