I have this problem A LOT. Since I really visit TD about twice a day in general, somebody has usually said anything I thought of saying. And I dislike the idea of posting "me too" type posts (which I think this almost is).

Amount of TV shows and movies I used to download: LOTS!
Amount since I signed up for Netflix about three years ago: None aside from anime that isn't released in the US yet (sometimes takes years, its ridiculous).
Well look at that. I guess somebody was able to compete with free.

    Re:

Your repeatedly calling it theft helps to destroy your argument.
While you seem to blindly follow the law and love it to death no matter how wrong it is, one would think you would realize it is not theft, or stealing.

Then again, perhaps that is why you never cite anything to back up any points you make. Between that and calling it theft and stealing all the time it is rather apparent you are not fond of facts and research.

    Copyright vs Counterfeit

To me it seems that the new found constant need to always say copyright infringement alongside counterfeit only means that copyright doesn't have a solid leg to stand on and harms nobody. They need to create this link to actual harm that just isn't there. If there was actual harm, they would respond to the debunkings of their studies, do some good studies, or perhaps stop trying to conflate copyright infringement with everything evil under the sun.

Even if I was completely new to the idea of copyright, that is the impression I would get. The same idea behind whenever you hear a politician wanting to pass a law "for the children". You know it isn't actually needed and will only have bad side effects.

When all of the IP gang stops trying to conflate IP with actual counterfeit goods, then I will have a little respect for them.

The market for entertainment has grown. Video games are far more popular now. The fact that it is falling worse just means that they are failing to serve the customers so they are losing their piece of consumer's entertainment budget.
    Seems simple enough to me.

    Re: Re: Re:

I actually don't go to the theatres as much anymore because 3D movies cost more to see and the 3D adds almost nothing to most movies. This is probably because for just about every film so far the 3D is an added after effect. That would explain why I always feel like it adds nothing when I see them. If they cost the same as a normal film I would still be going to the theatres. I would say I go about 1/3 as much as I used to because of the price raises for pointless 3D.

Thank you for helping me prove my point that the labels or any organization "representing" artists should have to go to court or to the law, and not just another private organization. I am glad you see our side of things.

I believe you infringed on copyrights, and you now need to send me all of your personal information. You are no longer allowed to hide behind the name of 'Anonymous Coward'. Until you do so I will simply take it that you agree with our side of the argument because you value your privacy, as do the rest of us here.
There are reasons court cases require proof to win, and not just somebody saying 'the other guy did this!'.

Well, if it is very expensive, hopefully it is good. If some random small time programmer can come along and release a simple version of it that people like more, than your version was too complicated or you paid too much or something. It should be pretty easy to compete with the knock offs since you have originality on your side.

    Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:

Your IPRED probably isn't such a great example considering the police over there have already complained that the law is making it harder to catch Actual criminals.
    http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100517/1609539448.shtml

Also, your 'proof' that the pirate activity dropped is very likely overstated, since in most cases, people just went further underground to the areas that aren't monitored.
    http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20091103/1744406785.shtml

I would venture to say that is not just an estimate, but it is exactly what happened. They knew the law was coming so they had methods to conceal themselves in place for when the law took effect. So to any outsider of the system, they would see a drop in pirated material. The only problem is they see that drop because they are not looking at the larger picture. And sales may have went up, but I am pretty sure I read that they came back down, and it was just a temporary surge.

So lets see, the Swedish public doesn't like that law, and neither do the law enforcement over there. Yet you try to use it as proof of a good thing. When you use something that nobody likes who is affected by it as proof of a good thing, you may need to reconsider whether using it is good proof, because nobody likes it. And laws that nobody likes that have no actual purpose, other than perhaps making it harder for police to catch criminals, should not be on the books.

On your other point though where they have to decide game or food, then the content people are losing absolutely zero money by your own argument. Not a penny. They will choose food and do without the content. And you know what, their mental health will decline a little due to lack of entertainment. Or they will find some other way to stay entertained. And either way, you STILL don't get their money, which makes your actions of stopping their piracy a complete waste of your resources and time.

Re: Re: Re: not so sure

there are games that cost millions of dollars to make (not every game can be minecraft)

    And then:

in order to create the blockbuster hits, you currently need to spend a lot of money on rendering engines, artists, game play specialists, programmers, marketing, etc

Those two points conflict very much so.
Minecraft is for all intents and purposes a 'blockbuster' game. It has netted insane profits for the 'team' that developed it. It is just another example that you in fact do not need to spend millions to make something people will love. I do however think that to an extent, games that do cost a lot to make and are very polished will always have their place in the market.

Or, here is an idea, how about you work on or pay somebody to work on a digital version and release it at the same time? Or is that a bit too logical for you?

    Streisand Effect?

Taking down the video doesn't seem to serve any legitimate purpose.

Sure it does, it serves the purpose of making sure LOTS more people know what happened. People love controversy. It is the same reason many people will expand hidden comments. They want to know what made it hide worthy. I know when I see a hidden comment I am always at least tempted to expand it to see what was said. Sometimes I do. Just human nature and curiosity perhaps?

  • Can Senator Patrick Leahy Actually Provide The Proof That The COICA Censorship Law Is Needed?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:

Well said but I think his attitude of not caring extends way beyond just what a couple of us think.
At the current rate of decline of AJ's argument style I suspect that within a few months he will be at angry dude level and only show up to throw massive amounts of insults and not even try to argue anything. With the level of posts he started at compared to where he is at now, I do not see this as outside the realm of possibilities.

    Re:

Once upon a time AJ's comments were interesting. Used to cite case law and have long thought out arguments. These days it is mostly just Mike bashing. I guess everybody has their own forms of mental masturbation, and bashing Mike just does it for AJ. That and attacking anyone and everyone while never actually answering serious questions. He only responds if the question contains no rational logical thought requirement.
A shadow of his former self.

I doubt Mike would be Darryl or AJ though. Too many people dislike those kinds of people, and they hardly make conversations interesting when their only argument is "YOU ARE WRONG BECAUSE OF X" when X has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

The most prominent example of why AJ has fallen from respect is in the post Karl did yesterday. Just scroll through the comments there for multiple people talking about how AJ used to be, and as to why he is now useless.

    You would think ..

.. that anyone buying from REPLICA-HANDBAGS-ONLINE.COM just might, just maybe, realize they are not buying the real thing? The website itself says it is replica handbags. How is that counterfeiting when they state right up front that they are fake? (that was one of the sites seized by ICE this time on their list on their webpage -> http://www.ice.gov/news/releases/1102/110214washingtondc.htm )
