He's now deleted all the videos, so I guess you'll have to weigh my word as a mostly-neutral party against his word as he's trying to paint himself as the victim of Big Corporate against WotC's word as they're trying to paint themselves as the victim of People Trying To Steal Their Profits Or Something.
What I can tell you from memory is that in the first video "a friend" sold them to him. By the third video he had "bought them from the internet."
You can imagine this must have been a harrowing experience, particularly considering this man never had any intention of doing anything wrong. Here’s what appears to have happened: the unreleased cards he got are part of an expansion pack for a card set that was originally released earlier this month. Those base cards are no longer under embargo. The cards he revealed, similarly named, very much are. In other words, the person he bought them from sent him cards from the wrong set.
Yeah, that's ... not exactly what happened. In his first couple videos, he was like "hehe guys I dunno if I'm supposed to have this yet WINK WINK I got them from a friend, uhh I mean a guy who sold them to me thinking they were the newest set WINK WINK." He knew exactly what he was doing and that he wasn't supposed to have them, but he posted them for clout and those sweet sweet Youtube views.
Supposedly, he was also deleting comments from WotC staff on those videos asking him to get in contact with them, and ignoring their emails.
That doesn't excuse WotC's heavy-handed response, but the primary thing this dude is a victim of is Fucking Around and Finding Out.
The league is making noises about having to comply with federal labor laws regarding the use of player likenesses in promotional or advertising material, but that doesn't make that much sense in the context of simply listing players currently under contract and on team rosters.
I don't think they are under contract with the CBA expired. There was a similar situation with the NFL about a decade ago. All contracts were suspended until the lockout was resolved. Notably, players could do "dangerous activities" that their contracts prohibited them from doing.
Beyond that, the MLBPA holds exclusive rights to all player likenesses when multiple players are involved. That right is probably assigned to MLB for the purposes of the website by the CBA ... which no longer exists. It may be partly CYA, but they may be entirely correct that they aren't legally allowed to use those likenesses.
Not kink-shaming but what kind of esoteric stuff are you into that you have to go to shady Russian sites to get it? Most people can just go to Pornhub and get what they need...
In fairness to the reddit admins not taking action, the last time "amateur reddit researchers" made claims about someone, they called a random college student the Boston Marathon bomber and harassed his family to the point of a breakdown. And then it turned out the poor kid had committed suicide over a month before...

I found Techdirt in 2010 when Ars ran their insane, guilt-trippy screed against ad blocking. Someone linked me to a post here that took the counter view, which made much more sense to me. Then I started reading through the rest of the content and got hooked.
MLB.tv is actually working really hard to get in-market streaming rights. All FOX RSN affiliates will have their local games streamed over MLB.tv in-market next year, and I'd imagine that other regional affiliates will follow suit soon. You still have to be a cable subscriber, but that barrier is probably going to fall soon. MLB is pretty progressive/innovative in terms of finding ways to get their product in front of fans, which is awesome.
If ISPs want to say that the content they deliver is their speech, then prosecute them for all the child porn, terrorist communications, and other unsavory content sent over their networks that law enforcement assures us is omnipresent and threatening our safety and security. Then maybe we can start over and regulate ISPs properly this time.
