I don't know (although oddly enough I do know a number who have gotten rich in the last year or two) but I DO know that the chances that an author can actually make a living and pay the bills have NEVER been higher -- especially if you don't follow any of Scott Turow's advice. I include myself in that group. Turow is indeed nothing but a Luddite.
Yes, of course, you sign over rights. In the case of current contracts you sign over huge rights much more than previously for very extended periods. The rights are what the publisher pays you for. What do you MEAN you don't sign away rights?
