Tim, great insight into the fact that improving the end user experience will build Google an even better foundation of users to generate revenue....this is the same reason I think that Apple's appstore will be successful. The "walled garden" as you put it, actually creates an enjoyable, easy and predictable service for end users. I think Apple designs systems like that with the customer in mind above all else.
Yes, it does. Beautifully. There are a few catches. In Safari, it does landscape and portrait mode, but you can't "save for local viewing". You have to reopen the webpage and reload each time. You can view pdfs as attachments, and they are always there, but there is no landscape mode in Mail on the iPhone yet.
I was preparing a post on just this topic after realizing that I had been using the iPhone for just that purpose...iTunes already distributes pdfs too, so it is really close actually.
Mike, I totally agree with you and I use open Wi-Fi every chance I can get, but technically you are sending data through their wires in their house, so that could be trespassing.

Re: E-Ink
That's a brilliant idea, especially since people like real books because they are easier to curl up on the couch with.
