I would not make that assumption.

It is a mistake to continue to abdicate Congressional responsibility to the executive branch. We are losing the balance of powers.

No, no. This is the way it is supposed to work! The only people who NEED to see this fatwa are those who use the filtering software and can therefore see it.

    The Imaginary and the Real

Granted that there is a lot of hype around cyberwar,
let's also keep in mind the real-world demo of a weapon in this war. Stuxnet, if we believe the analysis, caused major grief in Iran and had a significant impact on the development of their nuclear capabilities.
This appears to have been well architected, tightly targeted, military-grade smart weapon that has been very difficult to remediate and caused serious hardware damage.
I wouldn't want my infrastructure to be the target of Stuxnet 2.0.

    Professional Truckers

For years, trucking companies have relied on services like Rand-Mcnally, PC Miler and ProMiles to provide truck-specific routing. These services all took into account clearance and weight issues as well as practicality (interstate versus 2 lane routes). The internet came along and offered FREE routing (google, mapquest, etc.) and now inexpensive GPS units draw on those same low-cost map databases. You get what you pay for.

    CFL Problems

I bought into the CFL story early but am becoming increasingly disillusioned. Although advertised to have long life, my experience with several different brands is that they may even be worse life than std incandescents. I suspect that the long life claims are if left on continuously, which goes against normal home usage.

CFL's are not very tolerant of cold temps. I have to leave my porch light on 7x24 because a cold CFL won't restart reliably outdoors.

My big concern is that disposing of old CFL's means dealing with hazardous waste! How many households are going to make a special trip to their local Hazmat facility to throw away a light bulb? This begins to sound like the argument for "clean" nuclear power. Please don't ask me to support it until you have a way of disposing of the hazardous waste.

    jit

Skipping the image of organs flying overhead at midnight, this is one of the most sensible discussion threads I've seen in a while.
As an engineering and management professional, I am a big advocate of defect reduction efforts, focus on customer (read patient) requirements and outcomes. There are certainly some JIT efforts that would help hospitals, but as has been noted, it comes down to how responsive the JIT system is to spikes. Perhaps there is a balance between stock-'em-up and lean-and-mean. Perhaps some standardization would pay off.
Health care is one of the most difficult delivery systems I can imagine. I have had great experiences as well as the requisite number of frustrations with the system.

    Hi-priced gas

... and if you bike to work, you can drop your fitness club membership too. You will arrive with your metabolism up and not needing a shot of Starbucks, another savings.
Not all of us can, but there are a lot of benefits for those who do. What would you do with an extra kilobuck a year?

    Baghdad

Now if you put that paintball gun in Baghdad, that might be interesting...

    Great Firewall

When you know someone is spying on you, you have the upper hand as you can feed them disinformation. Essentially, you can turn the Great Firewall into a double agent.
