  • Connecticut Is Now The First State To Make Calls From Prisons Free For Inmates

    JoeDetroit ( profile ), 07 Jul, 2022 @ 01:39am

    About time!

20 years ago I had a family member in prison. She needed support from the outside (of course) as she was working on education/rehabilitation. Every call she made to us cost $50 from a California prison. The education wasn't free either but we paid it (& I never believed it would amount to anything). She got out, used her education to land a decent job in the field she was trained in. She excelled & moved up & now is the superintendent of the facility she works at. Her success in reentering society was directly caused by her support on the outside, from her loved ones. Lucky she had family that could afford $50 15 minute phone calls twice a month. These expensive phone calls punish the family of the inmates who did not break any laws. Inmates who's outside support can't afford these calls equates to a higher recidivism rate. That's not good for any of us.

    Take the car!

Suspected of breaking the law? Caught being in a high crime neighborhood asking directions on the street? They take your car. No conviction needed. You gotta buy it back from them. Or get threatened with 90 days for a misdemeanor (explain that to your boss). No arrest, no charges, but your car is gone unless you got thousands of dollars to buy it back.

  • Minneapolis Police Officers Demanded No-Knock Warrant, Killed Innocent Gunowner Nine Seconds After Entering Residence

    Re: Why? Just...why?

It's actually not at all a new thing. Law enforcement in the U.S. has pretty much always been busting heads & killing innocent people since it's inception. While we were being taught differently as kids, cops were doing all that & more. Maybe the fact that now days almost every carries a video recorder with them is finally shining a light on all this. A great podcast on the history of policing from Throughline: https://www.npr.org/2021/04/07/985039407/policing-in-america

Re: A number that should be 'zero' but seems to be much higher

Not just the civilian lives lost, but law enforcement lives lost. Raids of any kind are dangerous for everyone involved. One would think the Police Unions would have their own people's self interest & be lobbying against raids.

    How long will it take...?

How long will it take for social media to either dredge up the murdered innocent man's past or just make shit up about a criminal record? To show that somehow it's a good thing this cop murdered him.

Don't just stop no knock warrants, stop all "raids". Fucking KNOCK, wait for someone to answer, present the warrant, ask nicely to enter, all the while doing everything to not escalate the situation, ensure all residents are safe, dogs secured, then & only then start the search. The claim that somehow evidence will be destroyed does not sway my opinion when after a trillions of dollars blown on this drug war & drugs are not only available but cheaper than ever.

What do these three judges have in common?

They were nominated by Republican Presidents. Two George W, one from the Orange Julius hisself. Over & over we see wacked out crazy ass rulings like this & almost every time they have this in common.

  • Dallas PD Brags About Stealing Money From A Woman At An Airport, Is Now Facing Scrutiny From Its Oversight Board

    Dogs can sniff out money

They claim that the dogs are smelling drug residue on money. That dogs can smell the trace amount of drugs on cash is quite hard for me to believe. What is easy to believe is these dogs are trained specifically to sniff out the money itself. They aren't really after drugs, there is not much money in that. It makes for nice theater but what they want is the cash.

    Facts & truth!

It's not like facts & truth is paramount with the #45 crowd. So saying "privacy is paramount" while it's not anywhere close to accurate comes as no surprise. Just say it over & over & their people believe regardless of evidence or that lack thereof.

  • Comcast Expands Its Bullshit Usage Caps…In The Middle Of A Pandemic

    JoeDetroit ( profile ), 24 Nov, 2020 @ 07:21am

    Comcrap

Back when I was mailing checks to pay my cable bill, I always wrote them to Comcrap. & yes, they cashed them. Yes, I have the 1.2 terabyte cap.

I've gone over twice now during the pandemic (the two "courtesy"freebies). Next time they start charging. Each time it is likely caused by online all day "events" using MS teams. They insist we keep our cameras on to be "fully present". Participating in four days, 7 hour days, of steaming these meetings uses a lot of data.

My only other option is AT&T with a max of 29 megabits down. We tried it for 12 months a few years ago & it was not enough for my family. Comcrap knows this & won't budge on the pricing.

    Plus no more fiber

No more fiber makes me sad. They told me they were doing it but no, they now say they are done. A few blocks away they got AT&T fiber. I am stuck with Comcrap, it's fast but damned expensive. Working from home I've gone over my 1.2 terabyte cap twice now. We need the competition!

  • DHS Goes Full Gestapo In Response To Ongoing Protests In Oregon

    JoeDetroit ( profile ), 20 Jul, 2020 @ 11:43am

    The real reason for this

The real reason for these tactics is not to protect property & quell violence. Quite the opposite. This is planned & designed (not by Orange Face) to escalate the violence. They need the riots to return & get crazier so they can claim only by voting for the oranged faced man can we have law & order.

The truth is just the opposite. Removing that buffoon from office would likely quiet things down quite a bit.

RTFA they still have access to Whatsapp. Whatsapp is notorious for fake news, rumours, unsubstantiated information, & scams. Specially in India (source: Indian coworkers). What they can't do is copy/paste into a search engine to fact check. The ironic thing is where we do have Internet access, most don't bother fact checking. Maybe because what they are reading fits their beliefs.

  • Federal Court Permanently Blocks Michigan's Sex Offender Registry Law, Tells Legislators To Try Writing A Constitutional One

    JoeDetroit ( profile ), 21 Feb, 2020 @ 04:38am

    Term Limits

Michigan Legislature. What should be a poster child for how fucked up term limits are. These people couldn't govern (or write a decent piece of legislation) to save their own lives. Just a bunch of zealots that could care less what the voters want. Why would they?

Term limits sound great. "Throw the bums out!" But the reality is either you elect people that are clueless or elect people that are directly from a massive corporation & work diligently for that corporation until they get term limited & return to their job.

It's doubtful these clowns will be able to write a Constitutional sex registry law. Maybe now I will stop getting alerts from my credit protection service about another offender moving into the homeless shelter a mile away. One of the rare locations these people can live. A lot of these people really need to be tracked. How to do that I do not know. But then I don't write laws for a living.

    But TAX CUTS!

Yep, a massive corporate tax cut, deregulation, & lots of rah-rah & still Bob's company goes bankrupt. What happened to that windfall? I've got no idea what my employer did with it. Several business units closed, the products they made switched from make to buy (overseas of course), continued headcount reductions globally... & after staying fairly flat since 2010, huge increase in health insurance coverage.

But hot damn our CEO pocketed millions & our stock price is at a record high! Anyone could be walked out at any moment though so better not complain or ask for a raise. All I know is I will continue to try to vote in my best interest.

"Increasingly cops only understand force." This is hardly anything new. What's new (at least historically) is they are getting caught in the act. But only in rare cases do they get punished for it.

  • After Missing Cord Cutting Trend, Nielsen Falls Apart

    JoeDetroit ( profile ), 08 Aug, 2019 @ 05:03am

    Re: What they Want

Way back in 1987 or so I was selected by Nielsen to keep a log book. I completely lied filling it out. What I logged was only Star Trek reruns & Next Generation. The truth was I never actually turned on the TV. I was young, working lots of hours, & had cash to burn & fun to have. I was only home to sleep, shower, & try to get some laundry done. When I was very young they canceled Star Trek (my parents let me stay up late to watch it). I was still holding a grudge over that.
