  • University Hires Sports Info Director, Fires Him Two Hours Later After Local Paper Googles His Name

Candidate for high profile job isn't Googled and is hired.

Yet we hear about lowly people being Googled and not getting the job because some HR person thought there were to many party pictures.

One also wonders what fallout for the actual background firm they used who should have disclosed ANYTHING about that case.

But then most background data is flawed as there is no system in place to fix it.

School teaches valuable life lesson to someone who is 'different'. Do not expect those in power to have any concern if your rights are being abused if they feel it might reflect poorly on them. They will instead find a way to make sure that they and punish you for daring to bring to light their failings.

Because they are spineless and live in fear of the files that are kept that I bet would make Hoover moist.

You can not rule on something you have no understanding of.
I don't expect that a Judge be able to write code, but understanding basic terms would have put a damper on this before it got this fscking bad.

If not for the fact they don't keep them on computers because they can't secure anything, I would LOVE to see what all of the acronyms have and are using to keep our supposed representatives at bay.

If they walked out, perhaps it would have been best to demand the director appear and start answering questions... starting with what is the disciplinary action you intend to take against your subordinates for deciding they get to just walk out after ignoring straight forward questions. Or perhaps they think they can ignore subpoenas as well as they ignore the Constitution.

Somewhere there is a TV exec with his hands over his ears yelling NO NO NO NO NO like a toddler.

They spent years subdividing the world into little markets that they bleed a little at a time, how dare we build a world wide nearly instantaneously connected network and ruin their plans.

Now they have to decide to dismantle the broken systems they created for the old way, embrace the new way, or just declare all out war on their CUSTOMERS and keep engaging in a losing battle.

I think we should be more worried that this Judge is familiar with alleged bullying happening at the school.

Well if you don't have to answer to anyone, of course you get to just walk out.

We've seen media outlets not report on things to keep access.
We've seen lawyers talking to clients while being listened to.
We've seen a program where they create fake trails to coverup how evidence was gathered.

How many more core protections can we hollow out until the entire thing collapses?

  • Would You Pay $50 Per Episode To See Game Of Thrones?

    That Anonymous Coward ( profile ), 14 Apr, 2014 @ 05:51am

"likely more than they'd pay individually"

Which might be true to a point, but once you consider the number of people who don't have a couple hundred a month to piss away get a package to watch it on cable/satellite.
Of course then you still suffer with the you have to watch it when we want you to watch it... because they are working on making sure that DVR solutions aren't that beneficial. One little programming slip, and you lose the first 5 minutes or last 5 minutes.
Then you need to understand the neighborhood no longer gathers around the massive 8 inch set the rich neighbors bought (making sure little Jimmy never goes to college), they have massive screens in their pockets... and if the stars align right you might be lucky enough to have it offered (for an extra fee) for streaming... which will put you over your cap and push your cell bill to double your house payment.

Or... you click a link, solve a captcha, zip it over to your preferred device and watch it how, when, where you want.

At a buck a head, several million viewers is still millions coming in... cord cutting exists, perhaps it might be time to stop locking yourself into a dying platform and embrace direct sales. Better than neilson numbers to see how popular your content is, and I bet they might even pay an extra quarter for an ad free version.

Perhaps it is time to stop playing cloak and dagger about the deals and the actual numbers.
Movies make hundreds of millions, yet somehow never make enough to cover the costs to make it.
So horrible is the math that they need tax breaks to keep filming shows with the highest ratings.

It is time to force them to be honest, and reconnect with the market they take for granted. If you aren't making the consumer happy, you have failed in business.

  • Government Forces Free Press Advocacy Group To File Its Amicus Brief In NSL Case Under Seal

    That Anonymous Coward ( profile ), 14 Apr, 2014 @ 04:09am

But if it appears in a court document, the public might lose faith in the secret laws we use.

Opposing a possibly misused law, we've shown the 'checks & balances' to these secret powers are impotent, having to be filed under seal raises serious questions.

When everything looks like it needs to be a secret, perhaps we need to question that system. It is being overused and they keep pushing to hide more and more. Our Government decries dictators who hide things from their people, while trying to hide their own abuses of their own citizens.

We need to demand they stop and make it stop.
They have gone much further than many of the dystopian fiction writers imagined, sliding down the slippery slope that was always warned of. We need to climb back up the slope even if it is hard and arduous work.

IIRC, and I'm old and forgetful, TF had a story in recent history where it looked like RightsCorp was not making much money from what they were doing.
The business of rights 'enforcement' is being able to show a good balance sheet and sell out quickly.

Nearly all of the major players in this enforcement boondoggle have been started by people with ties to the industry, who sell the new snakeoil off and cash out.

Look at the history of DtecNet, that bastion of piracy fighting who demanded Google delist pages on HBO for having stolen content from... HBO. They spun up, acquired by another firm, acquired by yet another firm, and have the contract for 6 strikes.
They say the pirates are stealing from them, I think they should look at the actual losses in paying for smoke and mirrors that do not solve what at its heart is a failure to adapt to what the market wants.

But then these aren't the brightest bulbs, I've jousted online with one of the VPs... his last name is Steele (no not that one) and I wasn't kind. He denied facts I could prove and dismissed me... like that other Steele (and Stone) did. I like my odds.
