  • Simple Question: How Could President Obama Not Know That Ed Snowden Had The IG Report That Showed Widespread NSA Abuse?

    hopponit ( profile ), 17 Aug, 2013 @ 10:07pm

Obama not knowing what Snowden has

I'm a little worried that this shows a deeper cancer. The 'spooks' and advisers may not trust Obama! They may be spoon feeding him lies to cover their tracks. They may be scared that he will turn on them when lies are exposed. He really may NOT know the true facts. Sorry to say I don't believe this much myself, but if it is true we have even more to worry about.

Does anyone else remember the show Dinosaurs by the Jim Henson? One show was when they celebrated "Refrigerator Day". The story was that the refrigerator was the backbone of dinosaur civilization. It allowed them to form a culture instead of just foraging for food all the time. Cool show, wish they would bring it back.

    takedowns, microsoft

I'm beginning to think that Google needs to go ahead and start taking the sites down as soon as asked. Why! To give a good dose of feedback to companies that they are doing it WRONG. If they can do it in a manner where it hits the legacy industries the hardest it might be worth the suffering that would ensue. Can you imagine how loud the cry of "Wait! I didn't mean do it to me too!"would be? I don't think some of them would learn, but most might.

Are they really that clueless and incompetent? What is in these files that has both the Dems. and the Reps. going bats---t crazy. What have they been doing that's so bad that they don't want the American citizens to learn? The more they do the worse it looks on them.

I am way past all the profanity. Yes it had shock value at first, but I've heard them already. Now the f-bomb has gotten to be just as useful as hearing "like" every three words in a conversation. Like totally, I was like scratching my like ---humm--like nose. I do agree that there is too much interference in broadcast versus cable and all.

  • Study: Gamers Better, Faster At Interpreting Visual Input

    video gamers

Makes me wonder about something that may or may not link to this subject. I don't think of myself as a gamer. I prefer simulatiors such as racing. But when the kids were younger I played along with them. I had been into very high speed road racing as a younger guy and had been fairly good at it. The kids were surprised when I used to beat them at the games. The focus and speedy processing of input from the racing helped me with the games. So, if you tested race drivers along side gamers how would they stack up? Would the training of the brain of the gamers and drivers prove to be comparable? I'm thinking of more extreme racers such as F-1, motorcycles, or aircraft pylon racers just to name a few.

Just before reading this I checked out an article by Ed Bott. He had a copy of the report from the paper that broke the story. On page 5 of the their story they had a quote from Microsoft clarifying their involvement. Their spokesman stated that if there was a voluntary program to share info that Microsoft was not part of it. It struck me as odd that they stuck that into their statement. Makes me wonder if there is such an active program and Microsoft is under a gag order to prevent them from talking about it? Could this have been a way to slip the existence of such a program to the public without breaking the gag order?

    Sony

I am of the opinion that Sony got caught out on the root-kits on their second attempt. Prior to the scandal with CDs they were attempting to kill off Bleem, a Playstation emulator. They managed to drag Bleem through the courts so long that they (Bleem) had to go out of business, even though Sony didn't win in court. The weird part was if you had bought a copy of Bleem to run in your PC. When you ran Bleem it let you load a Playstation game and run it on your PC just like it would look on the console, neat ( and a great reason to buy Sony games and stuff!). However soon after the war on Bleem started if you loaded a game produced later, your PC would suddenly be unable to run Bleem, even older titles that had worked till then! The only work around was to re-install you whole Windows OS. The early titles would work again until to tried to load a later title. If you did, you had to go back and re-install the OS AGAIN. Real effective bully tactic but not a good public relations move. I have refused to buy any Sony products, or reccomend them ever since. Till then I had been a fan and had spread the word on how "great" Sony was. I am not sure that this counted as a root-kit, but if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, odds are it isn't a chicken. This was about a year or so before the CD root-kit. Still got my copy of Bleem, just can't really use it. That and the fact that I only bought Xbox stuff from then on!

"For editor's choice on the funny side, first we head to the news that Germany's Deutsche Telekom is tossing net neutrality out the window by throttling competing video and voice products on its network. Yet another anonymous commenter connected this with some other recent news:

Next Headline: Google announces its fiber service is moving into Berlin." Actually that sounds like a really, really GOOD idea. It sure would stir the fog a bit, maybe they would suddenly see past their noses.

    Teen arrest

Yeah, it's an overreaction. But what I want to add is about something you added. I am old enough to have listened to that often quoted line from John Lennon on live tv. I don't know if there is a copy of it from when it happened, but he didn't say it the way everybody says he did. It's out of context to his whole statement that day. He was talking about how the public and press were taking the Beatles and making too much of them! More or less what he said was that folks were making them out to be bigger than Jesus and he didn't think it was right! That was not how it got reported to the public on the news that night or anytime after. The only part that got reported was the first pat, not the whole statement. They were getting a little too big for their britches, but what he really said wasn't as bad as what they got attacked for. Why? H---, it made great headlines! Why else.

This reminds me of years ago (alot of 'em.) while taking a remedial driving class. The state trooper teaching us told us about cleaning up after accidents. He told how there was a big tanker wreak where some of the first responders and one of the troopers on the site went to the hospital. They complained of being overcome by the fumes from the tankers load. It was carrying "laboratory grade H2O!" The other troopers didn't let him live that one down.

A lot of folks will probably not agree with me but I have long felt the 'low' speed limits increase the number of accidents! Why? It is usually set low to keep the timid drivers from getting too afraid. This is too low to demand most folks attention. They get bored and do dumb stuff just because they have the free time and attention. At higher speeds they would have to focus on the task that matters, DRIVING! Yes, higher speeds will increase the effects of an accident! That's the reason more attention will be directed to driving. Deadly crashes can and do occur at fairly low speeds, higher speeds would be dangerous still but if drivers were paying attention because they had to it would decrease total number of deaths. No, it wouldn't eliminate them all. Traffic engineers set a higher speed for their roads, but the local politicians demand lower limits to look like they are doing something to "protect' the public. As always this is code for 'getting more votes'. This 'dumbs down' the driving most folks do cause they don't have to work at it. Goes back to the old saying "Build a system even a fool can use and only a fool will use it".

If they can't be trusted with this gift because they are still too old school to understand it. LEAK it, put it on the web and let them try to put it back in the bottle. Sometimes the best choice is to just do the right thing and watch the screaming start then die away as the fear is replaced with reality. In other words, just rip the band-aid off, it will be over and done with. Probably cause a whole lot less damage to the party in the long run too!

    Sony

Just another sign that Sony is going down hill(maybe it can come back, I used to be a fan of theirs.). I still boycott Sony because of what they did to Bleem (a PlayStation emulator to allow play on PCs). And I am wondering if they are ever going to get called to blame for their first root-kit. It wasn't first on CDs, they put it on later PlayStation games. If you put in a game issued after they took Bleem to court it put in a root-kit on your PC. It would render you PC unable to run a game under Bleem until you wiped your OS and re installed it. Older games would work again but if you loaded a later title you were back to square one. When they got caught a year or two later for CDs I thought the earlier exploit would come out. By the way Bleem wasn't found guilty, they just got lawyered to death. Too bad, they would have made me buy a lot more of Sony's stuff!

Okay, now I need to go look at some of the offerings of this type. It sounds like these are just short stories, but not tied up in collections. This could be the big shot in the arm that publishers need if they loosen up and spread out their inventory of short stories. Lets see if old school publishers can learn and grow rather than die out. Grow wiht it or die because of it.

As much as I dislike this moving forward there may be hope in it doing so. It will actually impact the average customer of these services. When it really does bite the general public, and cause them to get p--off then there may be a big backlash. It maybe too late then, so I hope we can change this first.
