My thoughts exactly. I know "lettered" folks who can't turn on a light switch. I know self taught geniuses who can do virtually anything. It is just more gate keeper crap, ability doesn't play into it, other than the ability to test well. I have extremely good instincts when it comes to tests, and can test out well above my ability, the most capable people I've met seem to be the opposite.
But that it might cascade around the globe, go viral so to speak. They need brought to their knees.
"For all the talk by some about just how evil Google's book scanning project is"
Maybe that should be was, as with all useful projects / technology, the gate keepers have broken it. It still works a little, but when you think of what might have been.....
Humanity as a whole could have benefited so much, at an admitted price to the gate keepers, but those 19th century folks need to move aside.
"sell their first-born if it guaranteed them more cash than they know what to do with"
You can do that?
I used to look forward to their new releases, now it is so ho-hum. They used to get what people wanted, now you have to like what they want. I won't get into a lot of specifics, but Need for speed comes to mind. It used to be fun and action easily the best driving games ever. Now it is a strategy game with cars. The closest thing we have to what it used to be is the driving part of GTA.
We really are doomed. If you are afraid of what will happen if you sign a petition, we might as well pack it in right now.
Play taps for the land of the free and the home of the brave.
"It's also no surprise when seniors look at the world through the eyes of "everyone's out to get them"."
More like; you don't get old by being stupid.
Don't forget "The President is gay"
It's like being in JR High again, and it is fun to say.
Doesn't really matter, if it is true or not.

PBS has jumped the shark, at least locally. They may have few commercials, but they have annoying fund raisers every other month, all month. I used to be an avid viewer and even a contributor, when they begged(fund raised) once a year. I even stuck with them when it went to 2 & even 4 times per year. Now it is every other month, the only place to go from here is: all begging, all the time. I'm not alone, most folks I have ask have left in disgust as well.
Outlook, Messenger, & Internet Explorer & such are always the most hacked, vulnerable appps for doing what ever each of them do. There is always a better alternative & invariably it is free, and below the radar for hackers. All they are doing with this move is proving my point and moving people to my side of the board. Only Sheeple will use their crap apps.
I never thought targeting would work & I'm seldom disappointed. My shopping habits are all over the place, I farm, stuff breaks, I love computers, stuff gets obsolete, I drive cars and trucks, stuff breaks. so in a given week i might shop everything from grass seed to ssd drives, with a timing belt thrown in. I buy everything possible on line, even appliances, if competitively priced. Saves time & gas.
I've bought buildings online, building kits anyhow. Worked real well; semis just kept bringing stuff till I had a building. Still, I get idiotic ads for stuff I'd never buy or prices I'd never pay.
"Was Abraham Lincoln a fuck-up? How about John Kennedy?"
Yes and yes
I may be guilty of being a Google apologist, due mainly to remembering how the internet worked before they came on the scene. I don't see ads so, it matters little how targeted they are.
It is called ADblock Plus for Firefox, look into it.

I used to race cars, there were rules as to what you could do to your car. If you suspected a competitor of cheating you posted a bond of say $100 to subject his car to tear down to reveal the suspected cheat. If you were wrong he kept the protest money, if you were right you got it back.
A system like that would keep more people honest, but it needs to be $1000s
"However enforcements/laws must also be put into place to protect copyrighted content."
Not so much, that is the source of the problems, I understand a little boot licking may be in order to be taken seriously, but the hole copyright thing is so far out of hand, a free zone is called for. Lets not approach the problem from the perspective that they have the power, and we need to meet them in the middle, we out number them millions to 1
Electronic leash
I don't own a cell phone, mainly because they are an electronic leash. The police tracking you by it is just a natural extension of that. Not to say that they should have unfettered access that, but you know they will, one way or another eventually.
I'd never own a car with Onstar for similar reasons.
There are times I do wish I had a cell phone, but it 2 or 3 times a year for a minute or 2. Hardly enough to give up privacy on that scale, not to mention the expense.
