...but he's responded to me about twice with easy contradictions since his epic fail in this item where I made him eat crow:

Lol. Back on article you linked to Mike says this to you:

...you really should recalibrate your reading comprehension sensors.

This is true now as it was then, because when I looked back through those threads, it looked like Mike wiped the floor with you. Just sayin'

I've been chasing Mike around for a couple years now,...

No you haven't been. You've been yapping at his ankles (as a guest of the blog Mike pays for, no less) for years.

Seriously, Blue, you come off like the football coach filling in as a substitute teacher for the Advanced Placement Calculus class really.

Re: First problem is corporations collecting the data.

Corporations whose charter is spying, such as Google and Facebook.

If you have a problem with these corporations then take your own advice that you give everyone else concerning copyright - don't use them. Simple.

And since you are so concerned with your privacy and Google, should I assume you've donated cash or at least some of your hard drive space and bandwidth to YaCy?

.... with common law as the basis of copyright,...

You still haven't given us any basis for this out-of-left-field "common law copyright theory" of yours.

On the other hand, Karl has completely demolished this "theory" here.

You just keep on yapping and ankle-biting on every article, don't you? Even when you are dead-wrong. Amazing.

Re: Well, this story has an emotional besides Populist appeal...

BUT should these relatively privileged kids succeed, they'd become the ones trying to wring every last rupee out of exploiting the poor! "Capitalism", besides more basic human nature, has this intrinsic contradiction: everyone wants exchanges to work only one way, in their favor. So I find it difficult to be TOO sympathetic or TOO hard on the publishers.

What the hell are you trying to say here? Are you really saying that capitalism is bad so we should stop people from bettering themselves with an education?? What the heck is your endgame? You want everyone dumbed down to your level or something? You make very little sense.

But skip that. What we need is a New Deal to level the playing field again. -- Actually, THIS time we need to take the playing field back! -- This item doesn't even begin to tackle the real inequalities that exist in India or the world. It's just Techdirt's characteristic way of pitting poor publishers against even poorer students, while ignoring truly obscene levels of unearned wealth. There are people who are born into literally feudal entitlements that EVERY HOUR brings them more money without effort than you'll earn in a month or a year. Let's tackle inequality at the level where it's clearly evil, and then much of the rest will sort itself out.

Once again, HOW would you achieve this? Knock anyone who is more successful than you down to your level? Sounds like you want to resolve the inequities of tree height in the forest with hatchet, axe and fire to me. How will this promote advancement of anything?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: OR, it's just a publicity stunt. Geez, ONE data point,

Or, Mike could just drop the banhammer on Blue, AJ, hurricane_head/googlypants, and darryl's IP addresses...

AFAIK Mike has never banned anyone from commenting on Techdirt. That would kind of go against his stance on Free Speech - that ignorant or incorrect speech should be countered with more speech, not censored. That's also why when the community down votes a comment it just hides it and it isn't removed entirely.

You end up getting deeper, more involved conversations when there are dissenting views, instead of an echo chamber with everyone agreeing on everything.

As an added bonus, we (the community here at Techdirt) get to claim higher moral ground over the sites which moderate and choose which comments to allow. Like the websites of the RIAA and the MPAA, all the MSM sites and that silly blog of David Lowery's.

Therefore, while you can quote or use snippets, you can't reasonably use someone else's work as the central part of yours! I'm not het up about this particular one, but just recognize the principle and you should be okay.

Maybe if you'd recognize the flaws of a principle like this you'd be okay. It goes against how culture and human advancement has been achieved since the dawning of mankind.

Personally, I couldn't care less what your misguided opinions are about this. I'm fighting for my grandchildren and their children on this one. It's my desire that they too have the ability to stand on the shoulders of the giants who went before them, so the future of humankind can advance without having to reinvent everything from the past.

New forms of media have historically been blamed for society's woes. These type of concerns go all the way back to the self-playing piano, which some said would put musicians out of work.

Makes me wonder if the parents of our prehistoric ancestors were worried about all ill effects from the graffiti their teenagers drew all over the cave walls.

I just don't think "comment at" is really correct. He isn't being "commented at", he is being refuted, disputed and admonished for the most part.

The principles of Free Speech means Blue is allowed to spout his bullshit to his little heart's content. But it also means that any ignorant and incorrect speech can be countered with more speech.

Anyone reading this blog can determine for themselves that Blue is full of shit simply by reading his comments filled with supposed "facts" that he doesn't defend when anyone calls him on them.

Now, twice I have asked for clarification on your supposed "common law copyright theory" and you've run away twice (and then claimed no one has refuted you on this). Don't make me go all AJ on you, OK? How about just answering this question, Blue:

Re: Re: Re: Re: Number of people employed at McDonald's may be all-time high too.

but in human history mankind has always used methods to keep certain things, writings or inventions or knowledge secret or protected in some way.

Yes, by using the natural right of "not sharing".

Look, I'm not entirely against society giving additional rights to creators to protect their creations, although I think we have gone too far with such things. But calling copyright a "natural right" is just plain wrong and diverts the conversion away from practicality into emotions.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Number of people employed at McDonald's may be all-time high too.

Copyright is your natural right that you own and can control what you think of or create or invent yourself.

If I write something down, I created what is written, it is mine and no one else's I have a natural right to what I have created naturally.

Copyright is not a "natural right" at all. Copyright artificially extends the creator's natural right to prevent copying beyond the point when it is shared with another human by restricting everyone else's natural right to copy.
