  • Free Speech Under Attack: Congress Ignores Bills To Protect Press And Critics

    Ehud Gavron ( profile ), 16 Dec, 2024 @ 11:59am

    Dems and Reps

I'll admit to having voted Dem in the last couple of elections, but that's because I vote issues, not people. I won't go into that here because it's not as relevant as: DEMOCRATS and REPUBLICANS are two parties of people with various viewpoints, and we all can agree or not with some or all of them. HOWEVER, ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE CORRUPT PIECES OF CRAP. So you can be a Kari Lake. Or a Donald Trump. Or a Tom slytherin Cotton. Or a Mitch "Put whom up for a vote?" McConnell. Or a MTG. Or that witch Don Junior just cheated on but she's going to be the US ambassador to Greece... or any of them. If you're an elected official then the second you "win" that election is the last second you're responsible to be ethical, not self-dealing, not a thief, and doing ANYTHING useful for the electorate. And then there's Ron Wyden. He's given decades of his life in public service, and a lot of what he's done I greatly ADMIRE and RESPECT. But why is it that of 645+ politicians in Congress... he stands alone? Please, I know I say things some of you find outrageous... but could you please answer me this one question? Why does Ron Wyden stand alone... and stands for US, and stands for all the things I learned about in elementary school (in the US) that our government is all about. Color me... naive. Elucidate.

  • Wyden Law Would Give FCC Greater Power Over Telecom’s Lax Cybersecurity In Wake Of Ugly Salt Typhoon Hack

In the US, First Amendment rights

If you live in the United States there are rights granted you under various laws among which is:

Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech...
Along those same lines, the Government has no business telling any business how to secure its data. It may argue that it does so to "protect" the consumer, but fundamentally it is forced speech. Sorry to disagree with Senator Wyden. I have much respect for him. The telcos suck¸ and offer no consumer protections and "a free year of LifeLock" when they are caught being incompetent. If there's a way to reconcile the rights under 1AM with the rights of telcos to screw the consumer, that would be great.

    Ign'rnt peeps

Democracy is a thing, and until 2016 was pretty well understood except for that 56 year old question of "What WERE the Germans thinking..." but that's old and hashed out so let's skip forward. And again we arrive at the question of why I MUST BE ALLOWED TO VOTE and yet there are others who must not... and who will determine the groups. SO read what Mr. Stone said in response to A.C. and I ask: Who determines whom the blithering idiot is that is not entitled to have a vote? ...and when that criteria is set... if I'm no longer allowed a vote how may I challenge it... and if I can not... having been forever disenfranchised... can I ever regain it? THESE are the issues that plauge the system into maintaining the rule of one man one vote. Except for Republicans trying to remove the vote of anyone who doesn't agree with them. Don't call me a hater. Just explain to me why Republican states, attorneys general, corrupt politicians, and old timey pieces of crap are WORKING HARD to ensure nobody else can vote. How long until they rmeove "voting" entirely so they don't have to "care" who votes?

    Christianity

MrWilson said it best, and I won't repeat it because res ipsa loquitur. But (having read all comments prior to my post here) I'm not seeing any solution. We (the readers, and extrapolating, the mass of US denizens, citizens, voters) know the issues. How do we solve them? If 51% say "let orangotango run the country" do we have an answer for this? Sure, he's NOT a woman, he's NOT Black, and that just makes him super acceptable? Please, someone more clever and intelligent, tell me (and the 49%) how we can get a leader who will lead us in positive directions.

    Classified documents

    Technically he does.
No, he doesn't. Not technically and not in any other way. If you ever apply for a clearance their is clear language about it.
    ...it's a joint ownership...
Did you make that shit up yourself or read it in your MAGAzine? Seriously, you came to post on techdirt with THAT? Next time bring your A game or cite a source for your made up shit.

    "Try"

So, you really think he’s going to try to stay in power till he’s deceased?
Will he "try"? Sure. He tried last time, which included a treasonous insurrection. He walked off with classified documents claiming he "owned them." He wants people to pledge loyalty to HIM not to the US or the Constitution. CAN the US actually "suck it up"???

Welcome, Eritrean potential brother. I don't know if you're a troll yet but let's go with YOUR LAWS ARE DIFFERENT THAN US LAWS. Which laws should be enforced by a US company on US soil with users who sign US contracts of adhesion agreeing to abide by such laws. See what I did there? If you want to discuss an African website following African law that anyone who signed up agreed to... well then yeah the US can just suck it up. Otherwise, if the poster signed a US company's US t&cs for US law... then the US [government] isn't going to just suck it up. Buttercup. E

    Computers are based on silicon.
Imagine if this was a sentence. People who post illiterate content are "based on" stupidity.
Silicon is refined from sand. No, it's not. Sand is just ground up rocks. Really? Like they were "ground" by "grinders". No. So... [conclusion deleted] No, so not so.
What we have learned here is something we've known all along. Anyone can post anything no matter how stupid, hide behind an anon login, and know they are a complete and total idiot but hope the rest of us think they are oh so clever. Fail. E

    The computer did it

"The computer did it" is no excuse. Neither is "educate people better" or "have a human review what the computer did." Those are all enablers. You want to enable computers to tell the rest of us what we can read or not, those are your arguments. OR Given that the DMCA is such a piece of genius. Fix it. There are two simple fixes: 1. A human must swear under oath that the entire filing is legal and accurate under penalty of perjury and fines. 2. Have fines. One Mississippi for one false filing. Two Mississippis for two filings. Four Miss'ippis for three false filings, as far as 2^n can go. Missi'pis start at $1,000 USD and can be set higher by the Court should it indicate part of a brazen pattern of abuse. That solves the problem of "did YOU piss in my yard or did your ROBOT DOG piss in your yard" or "Did you have YOUR robot dog on a leash when it pissed in my yard" and "How do we better educate robot dog owners." No, it's all about the operator. Legally make it their responsibility to aver under the law that their claim is true, and fine them if it isn't. E

Nobody cares who trump was talking to, about, for, etc.

    “Trump’s statement said that..."
Trump is irrelevant and in 24 hours will just be another whiny-ass gadfly filling the court system with superstitious nonsense. Nobody cares what he said, to whome he allegedly said it, if he says it again, pretends he never says it, or otherwise continues to lie. Look it's just human nature to take a shit. Stop naming it or listening to it.

    Orders of magnitude

just FYI 40Mbps is 6 orders of magnitude larger than 50bps. (40Kbps is 3 orders of magnitude larger than 50bps)
Yeah you'd think I would have not missed that... but here's how it goes: 1. Write a point. 2. Say "Wait that's way too long, let's trim it because brevity is the soul of wit" 3. Correct for gammar 4. Correct for meaning 5. What did I miss now Yes, 5E7 is 6 orders of magnitude higher than 5E1. I posted the former so I own the error. It doesn't change anything... but you're right.

    Paying per house

    ...they're paying canvassers per house.
There are 145 million homes in the United States today. If you wanted to "canvass" all of them $50B would get you $344/house. DoorDash will happily have somebody come deliver a sammich for $5. That's two order of magnitude lower. The conclusion is simple. If you have $50B and want to spend only $0.7B then you do a deal with DoorDash (or Grubhub or Uber or Lyft) and have them go "canvass". Whatever that means nowadays. You're either voting for the shit or against the shit and somebody at your door is just wasting your time. This isn't bible class.

Frankly I tend to "just accept" that if TD says "This link here says X" then that link there says X and I don't click through to check. On other sites I do say "Now hold on a minute, Mabel, there's no way that other site said that" and then I read it and sure enough Fox News did say that... E

I guesss this is not Mr Musk's freedom of expression gateway.

    Your comment is awaiting moderation.
I did use the I D 10 T word in suggesting a coder needed 40Mbps of bandwidth to relay 50bps (yeah, three orders of magnitude) less of data. Life's so hard these days. CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!!!
