I’m guessing Bailey used the acorn model of reading, where you focus on one acorn that proves your point while ignoring everything else that proves you wrong. The Trump DOJ did the same with the recent 9-0 Supreme Court ruling against them that they claimed was a victory based on their preferred definition of the word facilitate. Weeks later and they still publicly hide behind that one word so they can ignore the ruling while tap dancing in front of the judge who knows what the ruling really said. These people are small kids who enjoy being sneaky and refuse to believe that we exist outside of their heads and can see what they’re doing for ourselves. Twisting a court decision around based on a single word or sentence is actually more fun to them than winning the case. And if they ultimately lose, that’s ok because they’re nihilists who don’t want to play by the rules and “losing” just means things go back to how they were before. So they lost nothing. We’re playing chess against people who hate chess and just want to mess with us by breaking the rules. And they NEVER admit they lost. It was liberal activist judges who ruled against them, or media bias, or the dog ate their homework; so you should give them more money so they can finally do the magical things they always promise. That’s yet another way that losing is winning for these people. Rightwing policies don’t work so it only helps them when we protect them from themselves. The worst thing to happen to Republicans is for them to win office and be expected to do stuff. They prefer campaigning.
The way Hasan deals with Twitch trolls is precisely why he shouldn’t have said anything because he’s terrible at it. I watch his funny reaction videos on YouTube but the worst parts are when he gets sucked into yelling at his chat. Almost every video gets bogged down with him angrily defending himself against troll accusations before banning them because he’s so upset and doesn’t know how to let criticism go. I can only imagine how much worse it was with Border Patrol pumping him for info. He needs to understand that he’s a politically-flavored comedian, not a journalist or wonk.
I’m so tired of seeing people try to give some grand strategy to Trump’s ramblings, even those that call him a liar. Because he tells easily disproven lies that only make him look worse because he’s just that detached from reality. I never made the chatbot connection but that describes it best. He’s just generating words that sound plausible and he’s so difficult to understand that most people tune him out and just get the gist of what he’s trying to say. You need a good attention span to follow all the weaves he makes in his disjointed comments. And I find it frustrating how reporters almost never ask him follow up questions to get a better answer. It’s like they don’t really care about his responses, just as long as he says something. But I prefer conversations over interviews where they have a list of questions they want to get to and think details are boring just because they’re bad conversationalists themselves. Talkshow hosts are much better at it than journalists. As for the Chatbot Trump, that sounded like 2015 Trump because it was more aggressive and coherent. He’s faded a lot since then, especially after the double impact of Covid and losing to Sleepy Joe broke his brain. And I think the heavy campaigning last year was the final straw. His mouth still moves but his eyes show that nobody is home. The real presidents are Stephen Miller, Elon, and whoever else can get his ear or put something in front of him to sign. I’ll take President Vance over this. The other point is how this exposes why so many people think chatbots are intelligent: Because there are so many people who are essentially chatbots themselves. It’s not that chatbots are intelligent but that many humans aren’t. The ability to speak confidently is separate from intelligence.
Rightwingers think “politics” and being “partisan” is when anyone disagrees with them because they hate democracy and the very act of being political is wrong. They think all solutions are “common sense” which all good people agree with, so if you have a different point of view you must be insane or evil. But “common sense” is just what people call things they believe without knowing where they got it from. Things are true because they feel true so you should insult anyone who asks you to defend your claims since they’re OBVIOUSLY true. Then they rage that nothing works out like they were told because it MUST be the fault of their enemies and not the rich people they listen to.
Rightwing ideology is based on selfishness, so when they talk about free speech they ONLY mean for themselves and people they agree with. And if someone criticizes them or insults them for their words, that violates free speech because they should be immune from all harm. They’re the main character of this simulation and the rest of us are either villains, sidekicks, or NPC’s. The idea that everyone has equal rights offends them. As for this story, my only theory is that the point was to punish her as an example to the others, not to actually stop the book. But even that’s a bad idea. This is what happens when people surround themselves in a bubble where everyone treats them like infallible gods, then they meet the real world and don’t understand why they aren’t praised every time they fart. It’s always necessary to have people who tell you you’re wrong.
As a liberal who has been calling out the media decades before it was cool, I’m all for this. The reason we need to have an objective media is so that everyone can share a common news reality, even if we see it from different angles. But beginning with Fox News in the Bush years, the right has been creating their own news bubble completely separate from the real one. Now they know Fox News is Republican propaganda but they listen to “unbiased” shockjocks and other influencers who pretend to hate “both sides” but the two sides are Democrats and polite Republicans. And the things they believe make Newt Gingrich at his worst seem moderate. And when they read normal news they just see it as ridiculous propaganda because it doesn’t match the fantasy narratives they’re fed. Meanwhile, corporate media only gets worse and buys into the lies that they’re losing audience because they’re too liberal and maybe if they just attack Democrats enough they can win back the Real Americans and it’ll be just like the 80’s again; back when the modern rules of journalism were invented. And they think Objective Journalism means quoting people and letting us decide what we want to believe. I say screw it! We don’t need these conformist morons anymore. There are good news sources like Talking Points Memo and YouTube channels like MeidasTouch that report better news because they know that objectivity means reporting the truth, not asking questions to politicians when you already know the answer in hopes of tripping them up like you’re Perry Mason. Or finding a Democrat to say that Trump is lying because you don’t want to seem biased for knowing the truth. The NY Times has reeked for decades but WaPo was still doing ok work until recently. But if Bezos wants to nuke his newspaper, I’m glad he was dumb enough to do it publicly. There’s nothing magical about the name Washington Post that makes people trust it. You’re only trustworthy if you act trustworthy.
I could be wrong because I don’t know anything specific about this case, but I’ve dealt with a few MAGA about the Schumer thing; which they bring up to Whatabout Jan 6 as if what Schumer did was far worse and he belongs in jail. In their reality, Schumer said that in May 2022 after the Dobbs decision to rile up the crowd, then they marched down the street to protest at the Supreme Court justices’ houses and the guy brought a gun to assassinate Kavanaugh. That would of course require time travel and teleportation since Schumer said that over two years earlier and in a different place, but that’s what they think happened; based on a Facebook meme that combined them together because these people are visual learners, if you know what I mean. They do the same with a Maxine Waters quote about the kids in cages thing in 2018 where she said people should harass Trump officials, but they think she was telling BLM to assault random citizens on the street and burn down buildings in 2020; because of course they do. I’m guessing it’s a firmly entrenched fact among MAGA and either Martin is dumb enough to believe it or is just throwing red meat to the monster. But I only saw this awhile back on Yahoo comments and those Trumpers are relatively normal compared to the basement dwellers at Twitter and Truth Social, so I don’t know what the truly unhinged are up to. But I’m assuming it’s only worse.
“arbitrarily expelling foreign students teaches kids about “freedom and liberty” and how it was important for them to “learn what this country is about.”“ This contradiction has been at the core of the rightwing authoritarian movement, claiming that because America allows people to protest its therefore wrong to protest and protesters should be punished. They’ll insist that they’ll die to protect your right to free speech before telling you to shut up and leave the country if you complain about anything. But this ONLY applies to protests they disapprove of. They think they have the right to literally attack our own government when they aren’t in power but that any dissent is treason when they’re in power. That’s not hypocrisy, they just think they’re the righteous ones so everything they do is justified and only evil doers would get in their way.
