I'm not sure what is more surprising here: The amount of flack Facebook is receiving right now for lax data protection, or the lack of flack that appears to be coming towards the different governments for doing something very similar.
I mean, both have tons of data on us, and both will at times inadvertenly lose track of some of that data.
At least Facebook is being kind of open on the fact that all your actions are logged and sold...

Great news everyone, we've got books that disappear! A very very bad idea...What about the folks that take longer then the 5 months to finish? They would have to buy the books twice?
I'm sure some people will prefer to have their textbooks in digital form, but I also always preferred paper.
It's probably semi-illegal, but I finished my computer science degree without having bought any textbooks at all! I copied the stuff I needed using the school library and it's wonderful photo copier...I must have saved a couple of thousand euros by doing that! (plus they make a nice celebratory bonfire when you're finished :p)
I have no problems with copy protections as such, but am a bit confused about the ways they are protecting "their" property. I read up on the copy control technology that stopped me from listening to my new cd's, and apparently that protection scheme works through making deliberate errors on the cd's...These errors are too much for most CD-rom players, so they cannot be ripped without losing quality. (if they can be ripped at all)
This problem doesn't just come forward for pc users either! Some car cd players, and even some standard cd players won't be able to cope with the errors...Does this mean the recording industry is now allowed to dictate which hardware I use to listen to the cd's I buy? I think not.
And besides that, when I buy a cd I am tempted to think I'm buying some quality, but through putting errors on my cd's deliberately those cd's will also become unreadable much quicker then a normal cd would! Good thing they're cheaper than normal cd's! (oh, wait, they're not...)
The copy protection got me again this weekend! I bought three cd's (blue note trip), strangely only one of them had the copy control technology implemented. Being one of these silly folks without an actual stereo, because I use my pc to play my music, I was quite annoyed. I can't even access these cd's, nor grab mp3's, because of the wonderful addition they made to "protect" their music from being copied.
So I've been protected from even hearing the music they supposedly care so much about? Great job! :( I think next time I'll just see if I can download the music, instead of sponsoring a company that does not want me to hear their music...
I had the same problem when I bought the (at the time) new Beatie Boys album...The silly thing was that it wqas perfectly possible to rip mp3's off of it when I used my girlfriends pc. She had an older CD-ROM player, that just didn't respond to the copy protection!
This is getting silly though, copy protection that makes it harder to listen to the actual cd.
It is indeed illegal in wow...They even cracked down on hundreds oif folks that were usuing characters for the same "gold farming", so their main characters could get richer...But those accounts have been deleted.
I personally find it strange that people would spend real money on virtual items, but then again, with me being the type of gamer that gets insanely rich in any rpg I've played...I might even make some money from my hobby, so I'm not against it! :p
