I might have more sympathy for this position if it didn't seem like the majority of LEOs weren't trying to deny the public the ability to record their (the LEO's) activities. The public has the right to record the LEOs conducting traffic stops etc, yet many LEOs try to prevent this. And with the rise of body cams, LEOs, as a group, seem to be trying to prevent ANY access of the footage to the public.
LEOs want NO impediments to their job that may make it more difficult. And that seems to include ANY public oversight on their conduct.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? As far as LEOs are concerned - no one.
How about all lawyers working for the court system be pool lawyers? They walk in each morning, spin the wheel to find out if they are prosecutor, judge or defense, then spin again for the case. They all get paid the same scale, win or lose.
Cases like these are the reason why fewer and fewer people trust the police. If the only thing you can count on them to do is back each other up, then "Protect and Serve" really means nothing.
And before someone says "it's only a few bad apples", those few bad apples spoil the whole barrel because their fellow officers insist on protecting the few bad apples instead of tossing them out. Until the police start acting like the law applies to the police, until they treat those among their ranks who break the law as criminals, more and more people will believe they are no better than armed thugs, to be avoided at all cost.
