Nugget writes in with some disturbing news concerning what appears to have been an overzealous crackdown on child porn. Child porn is a serious problem that needs to be confronted, but that doesn’t mean by arresting people without evidence. There was a massive crackdown in the UK a few years back, called “Operation Ore.” However, as PC Pro is claiming in an investigative report, a key piece of evidence, supplied by US officials doesn’t actually prove what investigators claimed it proved (bugmenot unfortunately required). The US supplied the data on a number of people who subscribed to some sort of porn aggregation service, claiming that it had a big button on the front page that said “Click here for child porn.” The details, however, show that that was just an ad for another site (not linking them deeper into that service) all the way down at the bottom of the page, rather than the main portion of the site’s start page and the ad didn’t appear all the time (in fact, the investigators later admitted they only saw it once). As for the aggregation site itself, plenty of the content was clearly for legitimate porn. However, many people were charged with possession of child porn based solely on their subscription to this aggregator, and plenty of them had their names released to the press. The article notes that at least 33 people accused in Operation Ore committed suicide. It’s quite likely that many of those accused are guilty of possessing child porn — but that doesn’t mean they should be convicted (in public or in court) without any actual evidence. Unfortunately, since child porn is such a touchy issue, people are often afraid to go to bat for those falsely accused — and just the hint that people are involved can publicly destroy them.

Problem is, these days if accused of something like this you are guilty until proven innocent in most peoples eyes.
And even if you are proven innocent in a court of law, in most cases people will still view you as guilty due to the old saying “no smoke without fire”
Police should not be releaseing names in cases like this untill the person is proven guilty in a court of law, because even when the person proves his/her innocence their life is still pretty much over.

1. There seem to have been two distinct businesses involved.
2. The lack of other evidence could be explained by the DELAY OF OVER TWO YEARS before UK police started operation ORE. Perhaps the alleged paedophiles deleted it.

I am an individual who has been wrongly accused by British police based on American so-called intelligence.
And thanks to your blatant hatred towards “anyone who is suspected of a crime is guilty” attitude I attempted to take my own life.
For 6 months I and my wife had to endure such crap from Police & Social services that my own depression became so bad that the only option I could see was to end it all – therefore freeing my family from the seemingly never ending trauma.
Even after being found to have committed no offence, I still have to put up with lies and more lies. And when I question these lies (particularly from Social Services) it would appear that they are beyond reproach.
Sadly, the world’s media plays right into the hands of many of the idiots who post here, and sadder still, these idiots can see no further than the crap they’re being fed.
It would appear my only crime was bringing up two children to respect people, respect peoples property but above all, to be honest. I guess I’ve made a terrible mistake !!!!

Jim Bates, a forensic computer expert who has given evidence in some of the country?s most sensitive trials, including Operation Ore, is himself being investigated by police because of concerns over his professional qualifications and credibility.
Until a few days ago, anyone searching for a computer expert via the UK Register of Experts or Institution of Analysts and Programmers (of which Mr Bates is president) would have found a profile of him citing his BSc (Eng) qualification. But Jim Bates has no such degree.
Mr Bates is the latest forensic expert to have been caught out for misleading people over fake qualifications.
Earlier this month the crown prosecution service (CPS) ordered a review of all court cases which had heard evidence from Jessica Rees, a lip-reading expert, after it emerged that instead of gaining a BA in English at Balliol College, Oxford, she had not completed the course.
Jim Bates did not go to university at all; but he told the Eye he believed he was entitled to suggest he had a BSc because in 1965 he obtained a qualification from the Association of Electronic Engineers in Leicester and it had sent him a letter saying this was equivalent to a BSc.
He said he could not reproduce the letter because it had got lost in a house move. The only Association of Electronic Engineers the Eye can trace is in Hong Kong and there is no evidence that the Eye – or Mr Bates – can find to prove that it ever existed anywhere in the UK, let alone Leicester.
Mr Bates? lack of qualifications was raised during a trial in Croydon last year; but it has not yet led to any review of court cases with which he has been connected. Bates said the judge was satisfied the issue did not affect his ability to give factual expert evidence.
A CPS spokeswoman said the CPS would consider any material presented to it, but at the moment it did not have anything that caused it ?concern about his competence?. That may change if Inspector Knacker presents a dossier.
Mr Bates told the Eye that although he mistakenly believed he was entitled to the qualification, he had not actually used it for court work or in CV?s – contrary to documents seen by the Eye – and claimed that people were out to ?pillory him?. He pursued a similar theme on his website earlier this month.
?Recent events have produced some mud-slinging concerning non-existent academic qualifications. For the record I do not have a university degree and I have never attended a university as a student. The only post nominals (sic) that I use are FIAP (CMPN). That means fellow of the Institute of Analysts and Programmers and I was elected to this in December 1997.?
Meanwhile, Eye readers may recall that Mr Bates is no stranger to mud slinging himself. When the child porn case against DC Brian Stevens, liaison officer in the Soham murders, collapsed because a prosecution expert had made mistakes in his analysis of the detective?s laptop, Bates bayed for blood. He called for an inquiry into all the other cases carried out by Brian Underhill, a former policeman, and said:
?Any solicitor worth their salt will be looking to see if they can get their case thrown out simply because he is listed as an expert witness. And who can blame them??

Eye readers will recall that Mr Bates claimed to have a BSc in engineering when he has no such degree and never in fact went to university. But it now appears he is being reported to the attorney-general for an alleged contempt of court, after it was suggested that he tried to record proceedings at Northampton crown court last October.
Police are also looking into how some hard disks that Mr Bates had given them and on which, as an expert for the defence, he had asked them to record indecent images, already seemed to carry indecent images given to Mr Bates in a separate matter.
Meanwhile the Crown Prosecution Service also appears to be concerned; namely about Mr Bates? impartiality and independence as an expert, because his website, which discloses details of Operation Ore, the paedophile internet porn inquiry, questions the professional competence (among other things) of the experts called by the prosecution.
When the Eye first approached Mr Bates about his non-existent degree, he claimed he believed he had the equivalent qualification obtained in 1965 from the Association of Electronic Engineers in Leicester. But neither the Eye, nor Mr Bates, could find or prove that that organisation had ever existed.
Then Mr Bates claimed that though he thought he was entitled to use the qualification, he hadn?t actually used it for court work. Wrong again!
Mr Bates was used as the computer expert by police in their trumped up charges against Sergeant Gurpal Virdi (see Eyes passim) who was accused of sending race hate mail to his fellow ethnic minority officers.
At one time, when PS Virdi was supposed to be at his computer composing the offensive material, he was in fact miles away; and on another occasion pinpointed by Mr Bates, the material had already been printed and sealed in the office despatch system.
On his court witness statement, Mr Bates boldly declares; ?I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in electronic engineering.?

It is a sickening crime that touches something so base to people that it brings out hatred and no one should tolerate anyone who does it. This said being accussed of child abuse or being involved in such things destroys that persons life. Until it happens to you, you have very little idea what happens – I am currently going through this now. I’m not going to go in to details but when you are accussed of a crime that is such a sensitive area ie rape, murder, torture and abuse (essentially a crime that turns peoples stomachs) then both parties should be protected until the legal decision is made. People do see you as guilty regardless of the facts, and you know your local paper won’t be printing a fair view of this – they want to sell papers. I’ll leave you with one thought – you let people use your pc right? Have friends round and let them use your pc? Maybe someone house sits for you. What happens if two years down the line the police take your pc and with the power of forensics recover a handful of illegal porn images downloaded from P2P networks – well you have to prove you didn’t download them. Any ideas how you’d start?

sorry to the poor men who have been accused of this heinous crime but have genuinly not done wrong, but a member of my family was arrested in op ore and he was guilty. addmitted it and had thousands of pictures to prove his guilt. his wife had stumbled across something previously and he blamed it on his teenage son. these men will go to great lengths to hide what theyare doing and many more will make excuses..someone stole my card, someone used my pc. i accept that often this is the case but this cant deter us from seeking out these sick perverts who destroy lives. my uncle committed suicide because he was a evil coward who know in jail he would have been treated as he deserved. i think the world is a better place without him in it.

Good point, some were guilty of paying for and downloading abuse, however many were not charged but had their lives ruined purely by association with pervs. Some have now cleared their names and proved they were victims of fraud, but many still wait for their day in court. The fact that British Police totaly dissregarded any evidence of fraud in their investigation is the main reason so much objection exists about this operation. Nobody in their right minds would argue viewing abuse is right, but the US courts were right in their decision that a payment to Landslide was not evidence of a crime in itself, this is no technicality it is based on there being no evidence submitted by the FBI or the USPS which proved payments were ilegal. The British seem to have obtained evidence which did not exist in the US hearing but the allegation is that the evidence may have been fabricated by over zelous officers some of which themselves have a dubious levels of credibility when you learn they have been investigated for sexual missconduct in the work place. Jim Bates is not the only person involved with Ore who may have a questionable backround…

Nursery judged ‘unsafe’
SAFETY of children at the Hillsborough Day Nursery in Bishopstone is at risk according to the schools watchdog.
It was deemed to be good in its most recent inspection in 2010, but was judged inadequate during an inspection in November.

“This does not support children’s emotional well-being and help them prepare for changes in their life.”
The report raised further doubt around the suitability of management and staff, despite a new manager being put in place last year.
“The inspection was carried out following concerns that manager and provider do not have relevant knowledge or qualifications,” the report said. “Also that there is poor organisation and risk assessment and that education, planning and assessment is not sufficient.
“The provider has failed to notify Ofsted of a change to the partnership forming the registered person. This is an offence. The provider also does not have a robust system in place to ensure the suitability of staff as required.”
A spokesman for Hillsborough Day Nursery said: “Formal complaints about the report and the inspection have been lodged with Ofsted via ourselves and our solicitors.
